Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"On Monday the student and I transitioned into working on her Classical Civilizations class. She has a very specific study guide as to what will be on the first half of the exam (matching and identification) and then a much looser idea as to what the rest of the exam will be testing. We organized her flash cards and character maps for the Odyssey, the Aeneid and The Illiad, and then began working on her memorization. 50% of her grade will be based on the IDs, and for the rest of the time we just worked on her flash cards from the Odyssey, and did a quick overview as to the general plot line."
"The student and I finished reviewing the results from her first practice exam (the reading and science section). She did extremely well on the reading section (a 35!). After reviewing the science section, we started the essay portion. I had her write an essay to practice brainstorming and organize a well essay. She did great; she has mentioned that she does well with essays.
For our next session, the student will hopefully have finished another practice exam."
For our next session, the student will hopefully have finished another practice exam."
"The final problem in his packet related to the buying and selling of boats. We had to estimate a good price using regression. In this case the problem was very simple and he just wanted reinforcement on his logic. We also refined some of his previous work."
"The student and I studied for his math quiz tomorrow. It's going to cover parabolas, hyperbolas, and ellipses. The student really knows the math, but he needs to finish memorizing which equations go with which graphs."
"The student and I talked about what the score report showed. Then we corrected the Math section for the rest of the session."
"Today I worked with the students on critical thinking activities involving pattern recognition, pattern reproduction, and sequencing. The puzzles challenged Student 1, but she worked hard and was able to identify the sequences. Student 2 did very well on recognizing and completing the patterns."
"We reviewed stories and worked through notes together. We also had a little time for grammar review at the end of the session. The student has demonstrated that he has a good handle on the basics now, so that we can move to other grammar topics in the future."
"I had the student run a practice ACT Reading section under testing conditions; he finished with a few minutes to spare. Upon checking his work, we found that he had scored a 27, much higher than on his previous ACT date, and that several of his mistakes can be easily avoided the next time he faces the test."
"I had the student do a practice test from the test book. She struggled a little bit in terms of pacing, which affected her question accuracy due to rushing through some of them. However, I think that she approached the material well, and when we started going over some of her mistakes she was able to see where she made a mistake and to find the correct answer. On Friday we'll continue going through the missed questions."
"Topics: profit maximization, graphical interpretation, marginal utility per dollar practice and the Rational Spending Rule, why total expenditure is maximized when demand is unitelastic, practice graphing demand equations, finding the equilibrium price and quantity, elasticity formulae, ATC AVC MC price=MC for profit maximization, calculating profit / loss, shutdown condition, subsidies, my practice assignment on calculating CS, PS, DWL, under a price floor. Progress: the student is wellprepared for her midterm. She fully understands the subjects that were giving her trouble. She has not been able to get comfortable with the algebrarelated components of the subjects, but this is not a serious problem visavis the midterm, and I think she will gradually improve in this area. I believe she is mostly confident and comfortable with the test. I will be following up with her next week to see how the test went for her, and then again next month to see if she needs any additional help."
"We covered various topics in math 2 this session. We worked on the student's final exam study guide. We mainly covered trigonometric functions, imaginary numbers, and properties of circles."
"What did you cover specifically?** Multistep equations and inequalities**
Did you see any scores/grades to note progress? **Yes; her insession work was reviewed for understanding and ongoing accuracy **
What was the student struggling with most?**She is still struggling with knowing her multiplication facts ondemand.**
Did you leave them with any extra practice?**Yes; I left several worksheets and showed her an online multiplication program.**
Any concerns from this session?**No, despite the multiplication facts, she is still progressing well.**
What concepts did the student learn during this session. **She was pleased with her overall progress in understanding the process for solving equations.**
Her mother shared that the student was really disappointed that she received an 84 on a quiz. I felt that her disappointment in a B demonstrates her confidence in her math skills and her desire to excel."
