Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed the Mathematics Achievement section of the ISEE exam. She does not have much experience with simplifying fractions so we did a lesson on finding the greatest common factor and then dividing the numerator and denominator by the GCF. We also reviewed decimal place value, but we will need to do another lesson on it. When we reached the algebra questions, she really struggled, because algebra is not taught at all in the 4th grade. We will do some more review of the algebra concepts, but we will focus more on things taught in 4th grade such as fractions and decimal place value. I am sending a practice test that will include the review of math concepts and we will do another math lesson for our next session before we go over the essay portion of the test."
"Today I introduced a new factor into her test taking repertoire - timing. I've avoided enforcing a time limit thus far in working together because I wanted to initially focus on the knowledge of the material on the exam. As the exam draws closer, I've decided to slowly introduce timing her sections. She was frightened by the time limit, and she definitely did not perform to her highest capability. Moving forward, we will have to slowly ease her into the fact that the test will in fact be timed as well as other test taking tricks. As far the sections we covered today, we stuck exclusively to the Math and Quantitative sections."
"We finished geometry in a half hour, and spent the rest of the time reviewing. The student finished by taking a 40 question diagnostic, which he only got 1 question wrong. His progress is very encouraging and I think he will be well-prepped by test time."
