Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, the student and I continued to work on critical reading. Since our last session, she took her second SAT. She made progress on all three sections. Sometimes, her instinct would lead her to the right answer, but, because she lacked the conviction to select it, she would have lost points there in order to avoid the risk of a quarter-point deduction. Because she and I only have two sessions remaining after today's session, I've advised her that on test day she should trust her instinct if she is able to logically narrow down answer choices to 2 or even 3. I've also provided her vocabulary lists and encouraged her to study them. Building her vocabulary will be key to performing better in her weaker areas."
"I gave the student a few grammar lessons, strategies for passage reading, and a vocabulary packet to get started."
"I had the student go over the words in a couple of the vocabulary parts, and he copied down any of the words that he did not know. We then went over a grammar section from one of the practice SATs. He is able to get the correct answer most of the time. Of the different grammar type groups, he said that the ones based on a short passage are the easiest for him to answer. I told him to answer those first, in order to get the easy questions out of the way, and to leave more time to work on the harder questions. His number one homework goal for me is to actually write an essay for me to read. The rest of his homework is to keep on answering reading/writing portions of practice exams."
