Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over his vocabulary words and made picture flash cards and another set of flashcards with definitions in his own words. We also did a practice test modeled after the other vocabulary tests he has had in the past."
"Discussed student's goals in order to tailor tutoring sessions to student's needs. Introduced the types of questions to expect on the ACT Science section. Practiced ACT Science section questions. Discussed strategies for approaching each type of question on the ACT Science section."
"We reviewed for a test on scatter plots and linear regression by going over a homework study guide. The student already had a grasp on the material, but we ironed out the details and went over a few things likely to show up on the test."
"We first emailed the information form to the student's counselor. We also worked on and submitted a college application. The resume and optional essay are outstanding. Lastly, we started filling out the information for a second college application."
"Reviewed what the goals of tutoring will be with both the student and her mother, and discussed general help with Honors English and AP US History where the student feels she is heading towards a B+ but shooting for the A-range. Also gave her an introduction to the SAT verbal/writing. Primarily reviewed essay and writing sections, going over test-taking strategies and approaches so she can take a full exam for next time off which we'll set a baseline."
"We went over test two. The student had completed the English and Math sections, and took 45 minutes to complete the Reading section. However, those extra few minutes allowed her the time she needed to go through everything thoroughly, and she only missed one question! We discussed trying to push through the reading section in the allowed amount of time, and practicing doing so for next week's session. We will meet on Wednesday as our last session before the ACT. She has progressed well and if she can complete the sections in the allowed time, I am confident she will do well!"
"The student completed three pages from Math and English workbooks. He practiced reading several sight words, then practiced placing them in his own sentences. He also wrote words and sentences about his drawings. They completed three pages from their English workbook. We spent the remainder of the session practicing different ways to answer difficult math questions such as "25+___=100"."
"During this time we practiced for her upcoming English exam. We reviewed the types of sentence structures and, I even found additional practice for her to do online. We worked on her science review packet and math problems for the majority of the time. She had been absent from school and wanted to review her math homework."
"The student and I went over some questions from previous homework. We also worked an example finding the point of intersection using a matrix and its inverse, as well as Gauss-Jordan elimination method. I emailed her a handout that further explained Gauss-Jordan elimination."
"We practiced identifying subjects and supporting details in paragraphs and short stories. He easily identified the subjects and supporting details in sports stories he was interested in. He is going to read from his assigned book and I gave him some specific items to work on until our next session. No concerns."
"The student and I went over computing a derivative of a fraction of two polynomials raised to a power n, using two methods. We made use of chain rule to perform the derivative of a fraction of two polynomials. We used the fractional rule of differentiation and the product rule. I went over a proof of the fraction rule from the product rule with the student. She solved a couple additional problems to gain some practice. We went over the origin of the natural log function (Ln) or simply log. I touched to the logn (log base n) and how to differentiate natural log(x) to be 1/x. Overall, she participates, understands quickly, has no problem asking questions. She definitely is an excellent student who is eager to learn. It was a joy working with her."
"In this session, we focused on analyzing a passage a creating a TDEC with intent focus on constructing detailed sentences that gave the most amount of information in the most concise manner. We worked out of the book "Of Mice and Men." We discussed how to outline a 6 paragraph TDEC and how to transition from one focus to the next."
