Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session covered the rest of kinetics and solving rate law problems. We began the session with the student doing the free response questions from an old AP chemistry examination. We spent some time reviewing the concepts that the questions covered. We also reviewed a question he had regarding old free response questions that he was doing on his own at home."
"In this session, the student and I met to discuss her end-of-the-year project, which involves demonstrating a chemistry principle to the class. We talked about various experiments that would be feasible for her to do for the class, as well as experiments that would be exciting to see. We came up with several different experiments that she would discuss with her partner."
"Today we finished working on preparing the student for her AP exam by going over the final few FRQ questions. We covered a question that addressed proper lab protocol and worked on bonding theories heavily."
"The student and I reviewed kinetics and equilibrium in preparation for her upcoming final. We reviewed her notes and the AP review book for both chapters and did some practice problems. We worked through some multiple choice and free-response questions, as well as examples in the book. She was able to answer the majority of the questions correctly. She has an online practice program to use for studying and I will be sending her additional problems as well."
"Today we continued going through the student's book and discussed thermodynamics. In doing so, we defined what a system is and had a brief discussion about different forms of energy. We then moved onto the laws of thermodynamics and talked about enthalpy as heat energy. We discussed transformations of thermodynamic quantities (enthalpy, entropy, free energy) when the reaction equation is transformed, and she was able to quickly integrate this information and answer questions well with coupled reactions. We then discussed the concept of entropy, and related it to free energy."
"The student and I worked on reviewing for the AP chemistry exam. We did a few problems from a practice free response portion of the exam. While the problems proved challenging I really think that she would be in a good place before her exam on Monday. It's clear to me that she understands the concepts and can figure out how to approach the problem. There are a few things that I need to remind her of here and there, but in general she's very competent at chemistry. Small mathematical errors seem to change her final answer. If we can get past this, I think she'll get the A she wants in chemistry."
"We went through his practice questions for chemistry. It was about buffer solutions and their chart. I explained how he can find if it is strong base or strong acid. Also we talked about pH and pOH. He understood how he has to figure them out. We also covered some questions for entropy, endothermic and exothermic as well. He is doing good."
"We covered equilibrium, equilibrium constants and calculations, parts of oxidation and redox reactions and solubility products and reactions. Student isn't struggling, her grades in chemistry are decent and she is keeping up with the work. I left her with a few exercises from her text book so she can better understand what she is doing. Our next session is revision for her finals. I have no concerns about this session."
"We started this session by clarifying several points about redox reactions. The student then finished some homework that is due on Tuesday. He then began his exam review packet. He completed all the problems for Chapters 2, 3, and 4."
"This afternoon, the student and I had our last session! It's been such a pleasure seeing her progress throughout the school year. Her grasp of chemistry has become very strong. Our mission today was to prepare for her final exam, which will be an SAT II-style practice test. Since none of the concepts are new for the student, the only challenge is completing over 70 questions in one hour. Today, though, we managed to finish two entire practice tests, one from her teacher and the other test. I'm very confident that the student will finish her class with a great grade on her last test."
"We went through a practice SAT Subject test. It went well and we covered different chemistry concepts. He is taking the chemistry test on Saturday as well as taking the biology test."
"We went over the student's chemical reactions test & got most of the way through her acid-base test. She already has a strong understanding of most of the topics we covered; this session was largely to troubleshoot a small number of specific problems that were giving her some difficulty. We're meeting again tomorrow morning to finish up the acid-base test and go over the nuclear chemistry test."
