Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is making excellent progress! Her scores across all sections have improved! The last hurdle is SAT Writing, to which we devoted most of Wednesday's session. She needs to work on developing clear, direct thesis statements and topic sentences so I gave her homework to hone in on these."
"We worked on the verbal parts of the test. The goal was to get the student more focused and consistent, neither overconfident nor underestimating her own strengths. She needs to practice more so as to gain a better understanding of how the test works."
"We reviewed a math section and an improving sentences writing section that the student had completed on her own, then did a vocab section. She is feeling much more confident about the test. I suggested searching for sets on Latin and Greek roots at quizlet.com as a vocab building exercise. She agreed to complete timed sections from the math and writing tests on her own."
"The student and I went over a practice test he'd taken in both the critical reading and the math sections. He continues to work hard and he continues to make progress. We will be meeting again on Tuesday."
"Today we started working through two critical reading sections followed by two writing sections. The student is definitely improving."
"The student and I reviewed electron configurations, oxidation-reduction reactions, strong acids vs. weak acids, the pH scale, and the three main definitions of acids and bases. After completing several worksheets on these topics, we moved on to working on the subject test practice exam, and identified topics we will review next time including: polyatomic ions, and hydrocarbons."
"Today the student and I continued to go over math review with assessment test applications. We covered algebra, expressing one variable in terms of another, solving systems of linear equations, working with average values, working with ratios and proportions, both simply proportions, and geometry applications involving special right triangles and the ratios of side lengths. We then went through the rest of the diagnostic math problems that she missed when she did this test and applied the topics we had discussed. For the last half hour we began to look at the verbal part of the test and discussed how to approach sentence completion problems and the find the error improve the sentence grammar based questions. Next time we will focus on the reading comprehension sections, the essay, and if time permits, more math."
"The student and I started our session going over math and reading questions that he did by himself and had trouble with since our last session. It is clear that he is doing well in both reading and writing multiple choice questions. I continue to urge him to put in the time to study vocab, only 10 minutes per day, so that he can improve on the reading multiple choice questions, especially sentence completions."
"Tutor continues to introduce new test preps concepts for students. Tutor went over questions on sample tests and distributed formulas useful for the test. Tutor suggested clients to do practice test 3 and 4 in the book and study formulas for next sessions. Students and parents were very pleasant."
"We covered kinematics, circular motion, centripetal forces, friction, and how to break down the forces on an incline. We also went through a practice test for the assessment test physics to see if there were any problems that the student still did not have a firm grasp on."
"Today's session went well. Splitting our time between math and science, we went over various types of problems, including trigonometry and geometry. The student has shown consistent improvement and I look forward to continuing with her."
"The student and I began by reviewing the passages she completed for homework. We went over English, math, and reading sections. I explained any questions she answered incorrectly or found confusing. For the remainder of the session, she started working on a science section. After each passage, we discussed her responses together."
