Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we focused on Science I also reviewed the student's essay, which was structured well. She has achieved a 31-32 on her last few practice tests, so that's what I expect her to earn on the ACT next Saturday."
"These three students took the assessment test on May 5th and received their scores yesterday. All three of them scored in the range of high 1700s to high 1800s. This was slightly lower than they had been doing on practice tests, and is what I expected as most students tend to drop a bit the first time. While I know they can score even higher, they have great starting scores. Each of them now knows what to focus on for the next assessment test. We talked a bit about the test and then spent the rest of our session reviewing a full length practice test they had done."
"During this session the student solved the multiple choice section of a previous exam. The section covered all of the topics such as mechanics, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics. We reviewed some previous material including equations and talked about the specific units that should be used for each. We also went over some general test taking strategies such as how questions should be approached in different scenarios, what methods are best for answering them, and some of the common mistakes made and how to avoid them."
"We reviewed one of the student's practice tests in detail so that we could focus on problems that he's found difficult in the past. We also covered basic strategies for the essay section. I left him with some extra sections to practice, including an essay section so that we can cover good assessment test writing practices in more detail next time."
"In yesterday's session, the student and I went over her performance on the May exam. We went over the practice exam she did for homework and she scored well, in the high 600's, on the writing sections. The math is still pretty difficult for her so we focused on that for the remaining time. I assigned another practice exam before we meet again."
"Today we covered the sections on circuits, magnetic force, and electromagnetic induction. The student was unfamiliar with these concepts before today, but by the end he was able to answer the review questions with ease. He is going to take another practice test before our next meeting, and hopefully his increased comprehension will be reflected in a higher score on the practice."
"The student and I covered various math topics for the assessment test, specifically systems of equations, exponents, and solution sets. The most difficult part of these types of questions is figuring out how to approach the problem, so we worked on figuring out what strategies to use for each one. I recommended taking a full timed practice test from the prep book before meeting again next week to get a better idea of what topics need the most work."
"The student and I met for a session of assessment test tutoring. In the session we worked on all sections of the test. We first went over math and grammar homework. He did well on grammar. We then moved on to critical reading. The student showed a great deal of improvement on his reading and vocab skills, getting nearly two thirds of the questions correct. We closed the session by doing a few math problems on the distance formula and on the slope formula. He is now showing consistent improvement. He is in much better form than when we first started, and he continues to be a very hard worker."
"Today, I reviewed mostly critical reading passages, diction, vocabulary, and grammar. We also went over one of the essays and I showed the student how to quickly analyze and come up with an outline that would guide her hand when it came to actually writing the entire full-length essay. She has progressed incredibly well, and I believe will truly be ready for this exam come early June. Her study habits are excellent, and she has scored in the 700's in her subject tests. She is very bright, is a wonderful listener, and is not afraid to ask questions."
"We went over assessment test science and math. We went over answer in a science section, and then we covered math formulas in assessment test math. Then, we took a practice test in math. The student is slowly improving. I left him with a test in the book."
"The student and I went over the full practice test she had taken since our last meeting. She had also received the scores from her school administered test, improving by two points, which was great news! We then went through the sections in order. In English, we discussed a few style questions. Most of our time was spent on the math, going over some more strategies and always emphasizing the importance of confidence in tackling the toughest problems. We finished with reading, going over some small things. For next time, she and I will first go over the science section and then work through another practice test, taking sections and problems as they arise."
"We went over assessment test math, grammar, science, and vocabulary. The student was much stronger with vocabulary, science, and grammar than previously. As for math, she understood the concepts, sometimes made small mistakes, but ultimately got the right answer, though it took her longer than she would realistically have on the test. I left her with an additional science passage and the rest of the practice test."
