Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started by going over the goals the student has for these sessions. He hopes to reinforce his knowledge in algebra and get a head start in geometry. I had him take an Algebra diagnostics test and then we worked on areas that needed the most focus. We worked primarily on factoring and quadratics. Then we moved to cover chapter one in geometry, reviewing the basics."
"Today was spent discussing logarithmic functions and all their identities. Time was also spent on graphing and simplification. The student showed struggled with things he did not know but can quickly understand if given enough practice. I recommended a website where he can practice outside our tutoring session."
"The student and I reviewed his homework that I assigned him from the last session. After reviewing the homework I gave him the chapter 1 test, which he did excellent on! We did not have time to go over new material, so I assigned him a few problems from sections in chapter 2 that we have gone over in previous sections. I think this test shows how he is a quick learner, and just needs some extra help in understanding math concepts. I believe he will be successful this summer in reviewing pre-algebra."
"Today, the student and I covered quadratics, real roots, quadratic functions intersecting with linear functions, quadratic formula, and completing the square. The student wanted to review types of quadratics and finding their solutions. The student was positive and ready to review the material and practice problems assigned. I included key facts to remember about quadratic functions and finding the roots and solutions. I did not leave student with extra practice because we went over the extra practice before the session ended."
"We worked a little on the student's multiplication tables, and we also worked a bit more on long subtraction, addition and subtraction with fractions. I think that he's close to understanding both of those things (whereupon we can move on to multiplication and division with fractions)."
"This was our first summer session. The student's math teacher provided me with an outline of concepts to review this summer, plus some worksheets to use. Today we covered rounding numbers to a specific place value, online multiplication flashcards, 3-digit multiplication problems on paper, and a discussion of a word problem where I read the problem out loud, and then had him explain to me how he would go about solving it. He struggled with the rounding only a little at first, but after I explained it to him, he caught on immediately and quickly finished the worksheet. On the multiplication, he rushed and made mistakes, so we talked about the importance of taking one's time on complex problems. Overall a good session. I'll see him again this Wednesday."
