Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the extra practice problems I left. The student did almost all of them correctly, demonstrating a huge improvement from the past. I left a new extra practice assignment for him to work on."
"The student and I had a continuation of last week's session which was just going over areas and volume of 3-dimensional shapes. The session went well, we were able to discuss all the homework she was assigned for that week. She didn't show any signs of struggle with the subject material."
"The student had two tests to study for, one in algebra and one in geometry. She did well in the practice problems she already had so I made up more challenging ones that combined the concepts in algebra with the geometry for her to solve. Overall, she did well with those too."
"The student and I went over a new topic she started this week, which is dividing algebraic expressions. She is pretty comfortable with the concept of the problems but gets a little confused with how dividing actually subtracts the exponents. The second student and I worked on some new material that he is going over in class. They are looking at some geometry as well as solving algebraic equations. He understands the types of triangles and angles, and can do most of the math in his head."
"In the last session with the student, we covered multiplication and division of exponents with a common base. She did well and was able to quickly understand the concepts and solve the questions. She scored a 100% independently on her last two exams, making educated guesses on some problems she was not completely certain about. If the student continues at the following pace, I am sure she will continue doing very well."
"We reviewed the topics that we covered last week. Both girls had good retention. They had a few errors. We also covered multiplying polynomials. This was a new skill for them. They did very good with the box method. We will review it next week."
"Today was the student's best day yet. We worked through the quadratic formula for solving quadratic equations for his quiz tomorrow, and he consistently got each one correct. He has the formula memorized and his algebra is sound. My largest piece of advice for him was to check his work. Really proud of him today."
"The student and I worked on another miscellaneous worksheet. We got through it quickly and then moved on to a short book assignment covering exponent rules and graphing exponential functions. This assignment was not very difficult, so we went on to her review packet. I checked answers that she had filled in on her own and was very happy to see that she had only made 1 mistake!"
"Today we went over exponents and polynomial expressions. He had a basic understanding of exponents, but had not seen negative exponents before. He quickly understood how negative exponents are different from positive exponents, and didn't have any problems solving those questions. We also started looking at adding and subtracting polynomials. It took him a little longer to understand these types of problems, but by the end of the session he was able to solve questions on his own."
"The student is working on calculating the perimeter and area of triangles and quadrilaterals. As far as formulaic calculations, he has it down very well. We spent the majority of our time together helping him develop a strong understanding of a hierarchy of categorizations of quadrilaterals, such as differentiating between a rectangle, a square, and a parallelogram. He was really receptive to the categorization and asked a lot of questions specifically concerning curves and concave shapes. Obviously, this is beyond the purvey of his class, but I was glad that I could sufficiently answer his curiosity in a mathematical manner he could understand."
"In this session, we focused on the student's quiz on the perfect squares from 1-25. We spent half the time discussing what each perfect square is, and techniques for memorizing them. I quizzed her multiple times to help prepare her for her timed quiz tomorrow. After this, we went back and reviewed quadratic equations by graphing and solving them. It was good that we reviewed what we did last time, because she had not practiced since our last session and it was a good refresher."
"During the session, we covered 2 of 3 practice-test sets which the student has to finish for homework every weekend."
