Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began today's tutoring session with a review of some of the parts of speech: adjective, pronoun, conjunction, colon, semicolon, and commas. Many of the parts of speech he now knows by memory: noun, verb, proper noun, possessive noun, and tense (past, present, and future). He is nearing mastery level in this material (parts of speech). After we reviewed the parts of speech, he and I moved on to vocabulary development. Today, I gave him a Chapter 9 review quiz (to check for information retention). Next, we reviewed the ten new vocabulary words -- and their definitions -- in Chapter 10. After this, I gave him a Chapter 10 quiz (to check for understanding). Out of the twenty questions on the Chapter 10 quiz, he correctly answered all twenty questions correctly (100% -- Bravo!). We then moved on to idiom study. Today, we went over the twelve idioms in Chapter 8: "Do Your Best." He was familiar with most of the idioms in this chapter. Next, we moved on to grammar study. Specifically, he completed a "Quotation Marks, p. 2" Worksheet. He and I went over the 23 questions together until they were all correct. We finished today's tutoring lesson with journal writing. Today, I had him choose one of the prompts out of the book to respond to. After he finished writing his response to today's journal prompt, I had him read it to me aloud. With the remaining time, I had him write a brief description of the beach (using vivid adjectives--show don't tell). He is a very bright student. He is making very good progress in his English studies. He is always focused on the task at hand. Thus our tutoring sessions are always very productive."
"Today the student and I focused on symbolism and themes across the four American novels on his final exam, as well as their historical context and significance in relation to his AP US History course. We went over several important symbols in each of the four novels and how they might appear on his final exam. I left the student with several additional resources online to review until we meet next week."
"During today's tutoring session we worked on reading comprehension. Multiple choice and short answer questions followed the passages. The student did some creative writing using a story starter. We also worked on spelling and editing. During our last session, two weeks ago, I left the student vocabulary words and contractions to study. We went over them today. For next week, I left the student vocabulary and spelling words, as well as a writing assignment for her to complete."
