Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This is our last session and I will miss the student. We translated the part in Book 2 of the Aeneid where Laocoon is killed. We discussed the story and various aspects of it and listed poetic devices."
"Today's session started by going through a couple of questions the student had about the recent material covered in his Latin course. First, we went through how to form comparative and superlative adverbs. I emphasized that the formation of these forms hinged on his ability and comfort in recalling his adjective forms (including irregular adjective forms!) Once we had the correct comparative and superlative adjective forms, it was an easy enough formula to follow in order to come up with the comparative and superlative adverb forms (use the neuter nominative comparative adjective for the comparative adverb and the stem of the superlative adjective + -e for the superlative adverb form). I also had him translate these forms into English which can sometimes prove tricky, but he handled quite well. We next reviewed adjectives that use datives to complete their meaning. I showed him how he had been translating this construct correctly, without realizing it had a given name. We went through a number of examples just to ensure that he was comfortable identifying adjectives taking a dative in case it were to show up on a quiz or a test. We finished the session by translating a rather tricky passage that had a number of grammatical constructs (such as indirect statement) that were well worth reviewing."
"We worked on the noun chart again today, which the student has gotten a little rusty on, so that's something he needs to keep up with practicing regularly. Then we practiced the "Most Important Verbs" for his quiz tomorrow, working on saying them aloud, guessing the definition from the word it looks like, and spelling them based on sound. He should work with the additional study sheet I'll provide to get ready for tomorrow's quiz."
