Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I went over the math test 2 (p304) from the assessment prep guide. We discussed slopes, combinations, ratios, absolute values, circles, triangles, how to foil, scientific notation, and several other topics. The student is able to solve some of the problems very quickly without any help. I asked her to go through practice math test 3 before our next meeting."
"The student and I went over science, then English, and then math sections. Her science work seems to be going well, as does her English. I think she needs more practice and run throughs for each, but it seems to be going well."
"The student has tremendous math skills. We worked on a variety of math questions from basic to more advanced. We worked on a couple strategies to improve speed on the math questions. Our next section will be focused on science."
"We went over the results of the student's ACT. We spent the session going through some practice math questions, timing him on groups of 4-6 questions and then going over the quickest way to do those problems."
"Today we worked on some more difficult science practice. We picked the problems apart and talked about how the same methods apply to solving them."
"As we prepare for the second assessment test the student will take this fall, we focused on the most efficient ways to improve her scores in the math and science sections. She knows her general math and science well, but I feel that she can greatly improve her score if she uses a wide variety of problem types to practice from. It is essential that she continue to look for and complete problems that may not come easiest for her. Assessment test makers look for new and complicated questions using only a defined range of subject matter, meaning that the student has to truly master each area of the math section and treat every practice problem like a problem on the actual test, providing her full attention."
"We went over English and Reading test strategies and a couple of practice questions. I advised the student to get some sort of ACT prep book with a lot of practice tests or practice problems in order to work on them before her test."
"Today we went through a science section that the student completed last week. He did well on the science, getting 2-3 incorrect."
"The student and I went through general strategies for each section of the ACT test, except for Writing. He is an incredibly bright student. We discussed reading through the entire passages in the English section, marking up the questions in Math, mapping in Reading, and marking up everything in Science."
"We started the lesson by doing some practice reading material from the ACT website. The first passage we worked through together, summarizing as we went and answering questions. I encouraged the student to work on his short term recall of details by reading news articles and summarizing them for himself. After reading, we moved on to doing physics flashcards until the end of the lesson."
"The student and I went through a general ACT evaluation, and assessed her strengths and weaknesses. She does well in math, and from what I've seen she can logic her way through most problems. I did see that she struggled to remember some basic concepts and formulae, so I aim to review those tomorrow."
"First, we reviewed the format of the ACT and the contents of each section, as well as tips for the reading and writing sections. Then, we went through a practice test for the English section."
