Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student had state testing this week, so there were no new math topics. We reviewed domain and range as well as graphing quadratic equations. She often mixes up the point (0,x) and plots it on a graph as (x,0). We also looked at equations in y-intercept form and solved for the slope and y-intercept given a pair of points."
"Student seems to understand concepts of quantity now, but is having trouble making comparisons. When shown something, she knows which is longer or shorter, but she doesn't understand descriptions. In other words, when told a piece of string is one inch shorter than the other, she just assumes it is one inch long. For extra practice, she should work on understanding subtraction as a way of seeing the difference between measurements."
"We covered circles and their areas. We also covered finding the area of circles given certain sections missing from the circle. The student has progressed a lot! He was able to come up with a plan for finding the area of circles. Oftentimes his small mistakes in the problems involved rushing through. He can find the area of most circles without trouble. However, at the beginning of our lesson, he needed to be reminded of the formula for the area of a circle. We went through review problems from his practice book. Most of the problems he solved without my help. However, the key problems he had difficulty with were the ones missing complex shapes from inside. We will continue working on circle areas next session."
"The student and I worked on addition and multiplication. I showed her a few quick tricks for remembering the 5 times table and 9 times table."
"We reviewed completing the square with homework from the week before. The student has a new class. She seems to like her new teacher, who also has more teaching materials."
"The student came well prepared with several study questions on the following topics: 1. Area of a sector 2. Linear and angular speed 3. Trig functions (remembering i.e.. sin=y/r) 4. Reference angles. We worked through the questions quickly."
