Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started off with a discussion on the student's current test state vs. his goal for his August 15th exam. We did an overview on test taking strategies, and we decided that he try some new approaches, such as working passages in order of increasing difficulty and doing problems in a specific order (global to detail to inference). We also covered his progress on the science sections, which we felt could still be improved. Time management, especially when dealing with science passages, was stressed as a method of squeezing out additional time to check problems and minimize unnecessary mistakes. Between sessions he will take a verbal full length and we will go over the passages and questions together."
"The student and I have resumed tutoring, now that she has finished her semester. She let me know what concepts she wanted to specifically review, and I found relevant MCAT passages and questions related to those concepts. We talked about some strategies to improve her verbal score including doing some reading of scholarly articles, or periodicals like the NY Times or LA Times, and discussing them together for 15-20 minutes. I left her with practice problems in all three sections for our next meeting."
"We reviewed concepts from the physical sciences section of the exam including vapor pressure, kinetic equilibrium, entropy, and colligative properties. The student applied these concepts to practice problems from other review material."
"This session focused on physics, particularly some of the lower-yield concepts such as sound and materials science. There was also an emphasis on test-taking strategies and a schedule for the remaining five weeks before his test date. The student is to take a practice MCAT sometime between this session and our session next Wednesday."
"The student is doing very well in covering the material in a short amount of time. She has been reading physics and doing the practice problems worksheet I assigned her. She had questions on thermodynamics work which we worked through. Today we worked on a number of physical sciences passages in chemistry and electricity. I also had her do a difficult verbal reasoning passage that she did well in. I emphasized passage mapping and taking her time in conceptualizing the material in different ways, which she is very good at. She is taking practice test 3 tomorrow, her first practice full length test. I gave her instructions for this."
"The student and I reviewed the Psych section from her most recent practice exam. It seems that she has a fairly solid grasp on the material and the vocabulary covered in this section. More of her errors were related to reading and interpreting questions. I emphasized that she try to rephrase the question in her own words and drawn conclusions prior to reading the answer choices. We will review her physical sciences section on Sunday."
