Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I helped the student edit a paper that he had to turn in. He told me how he managed his time and it resulted in a timely written paper. It was well put together and fit the requirements well. I helped give him some more study tips and asked him to look at upcoming assignments for his classes. He did really well and is staying on track."
"Today, we made a list of all the assignments and tests that the student has not turned in/completed. After that, we divided it into sections according to whether he can do it now or if it requires speaking with a teacher first. Most of the Chemistry and English work will need to begin after he gets permission to bring his textbooks home, so we started working on Algebra quizzes. During the session, he completed the first Chapter 4 quiz, and he will complete the second one on Tuesday night. Tomorrow during school, he will check in with all his teachers, return his chemistry midterm grades, and print the art syllabus. During Tuesday's study hall, he will take his US history test."
"Another lovely day with this student. She had 3 assignments to complete today and we discussed which she would normally choose first and the different rationales for prioritizing. She chose the science (element) project which seemed hardest to her, because it was a large project and she knew very little about the elements or this format before starting. Initially some of the information was difficult to find, but I was very impressed with how easily she was able to research and find what she needed. As the work progressed, she found that it was not so difficult, but that it did include a lot of details. She really seems to understand that a large part of academic success requires simply following directions. She said, "Wow! I really know all about potassium now! I'm never going to forget this!" When I left, she was confident that the few remaining pieces of this project were easy enough to finish on her own, as are her other assignments."
"The student and I reviewed his choir songs and things his instructor has highlighted about each. We then studied indirect object pronouns (IOPs) in preparation for his quiz on Friday. He is able to identify the IOP as well as the direct object pronoun in a sentence. He showed a lot of improvement in asking himself the correct question in order to determine each. He also improved a lot at putting the IOP in the correct part of the sentence, before the conjugated verb. We will review this again on Thursday to make sure the information is sticking."
"During today's session, I assisted the student with studying for his Language Arts spelling test. By the time we finished, he was able to spell all of the words. Additionally, we reviewed his math homework. The assignment consisted of word problems that dealt with time. He did very well with the math homework and only missed one problem; he corrected it. During the last ten minutes, he read a poem from the assessment exam Reading test and answered four questions related to the poem."
"We covered the following: outlining for academic subjects, informal assessment of content, vocabulary and syntactic comprehension within the written context. Additionally, informal assessment of learning style and modality preference was conducted and discussed with the student."
