Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session back to new material, so we finished out the chapter on thermochemistry. This seems to be a particularly strong area for the student, since he has a good intuition about heat flow and how that relates to enthalpy change. He seems to be able to extrapolate from the basics to understand what is going on in a specific situation, which is a critical skill in chemistry."
"We covered questions on the student's multiple choice practice test tonight and worked through questions she was having some questions about. We worked through meiosis II, as we discovered that will also be covered on her test. We then worked through comprehension questions from both chapters 3 and 8. As always she did an exceptional job this session, and is continuing to improve with each session. She is clearly taking time out of her own schedule to study material on her own, and it shows! We will hold another review tomorrow night and she will test on this material Tuesday. Great job as always!"
"We discussed confidence intervals and the t-distribution and reviewed the student's corresponding homework. No concerns from this session; she has really hit her stride with the material and has a strong grasp of the more recent concepts."
"In this session, the student and I spent the majority of our time on two practice quizzes her teacher assigned to help prep the students for the upcoming AP exam. The first one covered momentum, center of mass, velocity of center of mass, and relative motion. The second one covered work and energy. She did very well with these, and I was very happy that with just a little help from me, she was able to complete them after having not seen the material since last semester. The last few minutes of our session, she worked on her current class assignment dealing with electric circuits. I showed her a way of organizing the information in these problems by drawing circuit diagrams for each step in the process of finding equivalent resistance and how you can use those to go backwards and find the voltage, current, resistance, and power in each circuit element, even when the circuit is neither in parallel or series, but a combination of the two."
"We went over the AP Biology exam, the circulatory system and a bit over the respiratory system. The student seemed very positive and I think she will do well with review and going over the details in some concepts. I told her about color-coding veins and arteries to distinguish them from each other and about grouping details such as organs, functions, and pathways in an organ system so that it is easier to learn them. I plan to give her notes and links about the AP Bio exam so that she can review. It was a great first session!"
"Today, the student and I worked on the photoelectric effect: photons, light as a particle/ wave, quantum of energy, work formula, photoelectrons, and threshold frequency. He initially had some trouble understanding the setup of how the phenomenon worked and some previous related concepts, but we went over it in detail and he understood better. I taught him to make a drawing of how something works and the steps involved and to write out definitions of new terms. For extra practice, he had the assignment questions to finish."
