Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session we covered several different types of problems related to circles and their areas. The earlier problems focused on relationships between area, radius, and diameter, and the later problems were more complex involving finding the area of a shaded region, or subtracting an area of a certain shape from the area of another. The student seemed to be pretty comfortable with these processes by the end of the session."
"As we are preparing for a final exam, we covered multiple geometric concepts. The student's attitude was excellent throughout the session. Once he saw the concepts, he understood them. I always emphasize conceptual understanding instead of memorization as a strategy and a goal for studying. The student has plenty of extra practice from his teacher and his attitude was outstanding throughout the session! I enjoyed working with him."
"The student's main focus is to prepare for his final exam. We have been working through a 16page review packet and have covered most of the pages already, but we are now going slowly through every page in depth. This session we went over special right triangles (306090 and 454590, as well isosceles triangles). We worked through problems requiring SohCahToa, Pythagorean theorem, and finding area. He had some familiarity with these concepts but he had small gaps that needed to be filled, such as: understanding that SohCahToa sides depend on which angle of a triangle is being used as a reference point, and that triangles have to be right triangles in order to use these relationships."
"Angles within and around circles inscribed polygons, equivalent angles, various equations relating to finding angles and lengths of lines in and around circles."
"We covered topics in both geometry and precalculus this session. In geometry, we discussed transformations of 2D shapes. The three transformations covered were translations, reflections, and rotations. We saw that translations could be represented by a vector which contained the information regarding the change in the x/y directions. We also saw that two translations could be represented by one translation. We talked about the three main reflection types (over the x, y and y=x axis). We focused on finding reflections of lines parallel to the y and x axis. Lastly, we discussed the composite transformations and line/plane/axis symmetry.
In precalculus, we reinforced the notion of limits. We first found limits of functions using their graphs and differentiated between finding limits from the left and right. We then found limits of a function using just its equation. The simplest questions were quite trivial and involved just plugging in the limit of x. The harder limits involved manipulating the function form algebraically because plugging in the limit of x resulted in an undefined value. We wrapped up limits by going over some theory (existence, etc.).
Lastly, we began to review for the precalculus final. In the remaining time, we discussed the first topic covered this semester which was trigonometric equations and identities. We memorized two identities and learned to solve three types of trigonometric equations. We will continue the review the next session."

"Saturday was the student's 6th Geometry tutoring session. It was very successful. We spent the entire session completing challenging problems where he had to calculate the volume, lateral area, and surface area of 3D shapes. Many of these problems involved using prior knowledge to find missing dimensions in order to answer the question, including Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles, area of a regular polygon, and similar shapes. Additionally, he had to make conjectures describing how the surface areas and volumes of shapes change when their dimensions change, and how the dimensions change when their surface areas and volumes change. He has a deep and full understanding of this chapter and is ready for his upcoming assessment. Moving forward, we will prepare for his final exam by reviewing all past topics while keeping him interested by assigning challenging problems. Excellent work!"
