Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We briefly reviewed the previous material on covalent and ionic bonds and the properties of water. We also discussed the cell structure, the greenhouse affect, and how living organisms are able to survive in the frozen lakes. We concluded with an overview of evolutionary theory."
"Today was the student's first session. We worked on the rules for adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, and the definition of absolute value, and we continued with solving for the domain. I drew a tic tac toe chart to help with multiplying and dividing integers. I am going to bring a multiplication sheet next time to help her with her multiplication facts. She informed me that she was having a biology test this Monday. We worked on identifying the parts of the animal cell and the parts of the plant cell. She labeled the parts on two drawings and we continued with reviewing her 36 vocabulary terms."
"At the beginning of the session, we talked over the homework and tests/quizzes for the week, and I made her a suggested homework schedule. She is now caught up on her history readings, but she has not written out any of the assignments that go along with them. These assignments will be the single most important tool in studying for the test, and in fact, simply doing them is the best way to study for the test. She needs to work on them tonight and Monday and finish the last one or two on Tuesday. This week, while outlining the homework plan, I explained to her how I constructed the plan and assigned tasks with indefinite due dates to certain days. I hope that this will be a skill that sticks with her when she is no longer in tutoring because it will be beneficial for her long-term organization and productivity. She said that she had only followed the first day or so of the homework plan last week, but that she had thought about it more this week than the previous week. While the homework plans I construct for her are somewhat fungible and needn't be followed to the letter, they are very useful for making sure everything gets done in time. After talking through the week's homework, we spent most of the session studying for her biology quiz. She made flashcards, and I explained concepts which she did not remember or did not understand."
