The student's final is tomorrow, so we studied all the topics that will be covered. Her teacher gave her a formula sheet that she can use on the test, so we went over that and did some sample problems. We focused on area, volume, and circles. But we also went back and reviewed the quadratic formula.

Tutoring review by Arlene in Gainesville, GA
We covered GCF, factoring, and how to change radicals into fractional exponents. She was struggling most with not paying close attention to the problem and making small mistakes as a result. She was determined to learn the rules and complete the examples correctly. I showed her three ways to factor and how to use flashcards to her advantage. I did not leave her with additional work or see any grades. Wins from this session were that she remembered the concepts I taught her last session and used that knowledge to solve problems from yesterday's session.

The student had an exam on functions and defining the domain, range, and creating graphs. He used the two hours to review all topics that were to be covered on the exam, as well as very thoroughly practicing on the most difficult topics to understand. He felt comfortable after the two hour session, and there will be a follow up phone call on Sunday night to go over his exam.

Tutoring review by Michael in Gainesville, GA
The student and I reviewed for his upcoming Unit II Test. We specifically worked on these types of problems: Properties of numbers, Identities, Order of Operations, Solving Multi-step equations, Special Equations, Fractional Equations & Literal Equations. Most of our time was spent practicing literal equations. These are general algebraic equations, but instead of having numbers and one variable, the equation is made up entirely of letters. He let me know that he felt like he has been playing a bit of catch up in regards to this part of the course material. We went over some of the practice problems from his worksheet, and I also gave him additional questions to practice. He seemed to quickly grasp the concepts of using letters in the same fashion that one would use numbers when solving algebraic equations. Some tips for the equations that I stressed are whatever you do to one side do to the other. Specifically, that when you add to one side you must add to the other, and show this by using an addition side rather than placing the added value next to the other value using a multiplication symbol. I am very excited to be working with him; he seems to have a lot of intrinsic motivation to succeed in his class and has a very sharp mind. I am looking forward to our next session!
