Boulder Latin Tutoring FAQ

For extra assistance with your Latin studies, contact Varsity Tutors to connect with a Boulder Latin tutor who can help you study and increase your confidence with the language. Learning a new language can be a challenge, especially if you are taking other classes or work full-time during the day. Boulder Latin tutoring is offered both online and in-person, so you or your student can easily meet with an instructor at a convenient time. As you practice with an expert instructor and make Latin learning a part of your routine, you can increase your fluency and read Latin more naturally.

What are the benefits of learning from a Boulder Latin tutor near me?

When you enroll in private instruction, whether online or in-person, you'll connect with an instructor who can mentor you through the learning process. Your teacher is excited to help you learn and wants to help you reach for your goals in Latin. Unlike in a traditional classroom, Boulder Latin tutors are driven by your success and are motivated to help you feel more confident as a Latin student. Whether you are studying Latin for academic, professional, or personal reasons, you can thrive under mentorship from a private instructor.

In addition to mentorship, you can benefit from the knowledge and expertise that your Boulder Latin tutor brings to each meeting. Prior to working with students, all instructors are required to pass through a strict vetting process where their qualifications, fluency, and background are all assessed. This process also examines their personality, so you can feel confident that you are connecting with an expert qualified in both attitude and aptitude. Your instructor can answer any questions you may have about Latin, from vocabulary to inflections to Latin history.

Individual instruction provides you with one-on-one attention that you may not receive in a traditional classroom environment. As the only student in a meeting, you are the sole priority of your instructor. You can eliminate distractions or uncomfortable classroom settings by choosing the location where you meet with your instructor—whether physically or digitally—and maximize your time when you can focus more easily. Your instructor can personalize lessons and activities as they get to know your learning style, goals in Latin, and skill level.

Tutoring is customizable and can be adjusted to meet your needs. If you want to learn Latin to prepare to apply for medical school, for example, your instructor can work on specific terminology and root words that you may encounter in the medical field. On the other hand, perhaps your student simply wants to feel more confident in their Latin elective class at school. An instructor can help them with homework and test preparation activities that work for their level of competency. Boulder Latin tutors can recalibrate the pace, content, or focus of a lesson based on the student they are teaching.

What are my options for meeting with Boulder Latin tutors?

Depending on what works for your schedule, you can meet with your instructor online or in-person. Online instruction is especially convenient since your academic mentor is available from any location. As long as you have an internet connection, you can access your lessons and meet with your instructor. This makes it easier to schedule Boulder Latin tutoring into your schedule, and it also allows you to eliminate distractions by choosing the location where you study. If you work best in a busy coffee shop, that can be your classroom; on the other hand, if you prefer to study Latin from the quiet of your home office, you can meet with your instructor there.

When you meet with your instructor online, you connect with them using the Live Learning Platform. This platform, which operates like a digital classroom, contains tools and features to help you engage with your Latin studies. Your instructor can use video chat to deliver lessons or lectures, for example, allowing you to see and hear them the same way you would in an in-person meeting. Ask questions and receive direct feedback in real time, even though you are not in the same location as your instructor.

As you study Latin on the Live Learning Platform, your instructor can also use the virtual whiteboard to visualize important material. Your academic mentor can spell new vocabulary words, write out declension charts, or draw a diagram that explains sentence structure. Boulder Latin tutors can use a shared document editor and embedded activities in the platform to further increase your retention. The Live Learning Platform brings the amenities of a traditional classroom into a convenient, accessible environment that you can log into from almost anywhere.

If online instruction does not work for you or your student, there's also the option to meet with a Boulder Latin tutor in person. You can meet with your instructor on campus at the University of Colorado - Boulder, for example. An instructor can meet your student in the local library after school or even at your family's dining room table. By offering both online and in-person lessons, you have more options to choose from when working private instruction into your schedule.

To continue your Latin studies beyond tutoring, consider enrolling in an online class. Like private instruction, classes are taught by qualified, knowledgeable instructors and can offer supplemental support to help you learn Latin. Classes can also connect you with a network of other students with whom you can learn with, collaborate on projects, and share notes to further your knowledge.

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Boulder, CO
Today, we worked through the student's homework translation assignment for class. They've been covering deponents in class, so we were prepared to review those as they came up in the reading, but we didn't actually encounter any deponents. We did come across a cum-clause, an indirect question, and an indirect statement, so we were able to review all of those subjunctive clauses, as well as the form of the pluperfect subjunctive and of the present passive infinitive. She struggled a bit with vocabulary, which is understandable after a long break from school. I worked again on reminding her to break down passages into meaningful chunks, and from what she said it seems she's been trying to do this, so my advice has made some impact on how she looks at a Latin sentence.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in Boulder, CO
To begin our session, the student completed a translation exercise on p. 59 of his textbook. This exercise provided a quick review of the comparison of adverbs. I am impressed by his ability to identify degrees of adjectives and adverbs. Next we started Exercise 25.2, another translation exercise in his textbook. For each sentence, I asked him to identify the subject(s), verb(s), direct object(s), and indirect object(s). I also asked him to identify the case, number, and gender of nouns; the person, number, and tense of verbs; and the degree of adjective(s) and adverb(s). His ability to define Latin verbs based on English derivatives is improving. I am excited that he has memorized the conjugation chart of the Latin verb, sum, as this helps him correctly identify person and number when asked to parse verbs.

Latin Tutoring review by Alexandra in Boulder, CO
The student and I covered a variety of topics he has recently been taught in class, including third declension nouns, third conjugation verbs (with emphasis on the formation of the future tense), and a few more uses of the ablative case. Per his request, we also translated a number of sentences in order to improve his translating skills. He is getting much better at catching himself when he rushes through translations! I think continued practice with following a set "formula" for breaking down his sentences (identifying the verb first, then finding a nominative noun that matches THEN dealing with prepositional phrases etc.) will continue to make translating more routine for him.

Latin Tutoring review by Christopher in Boulder, CO
This session was devoted almost entirely to the lesson readings. We continued to read the adaptation of the Trojan War story, and I emphasized the vocabulary, so that the student could learn the definitions. I assigned a packet of practice work, including more English-Latin sentence composition.

Uploaded parts of a classical speech and literary devices Cicero would use. The student still did not have any ideas as to topic or audience, so we determined that and I told him how to go about building his speech with the template I gave him. He will write his speech and email it to me for proofing.

Latin Tutoring review by Anna in Boulder, CO
The student's Latin assignment was to memorize vocabulary from chapters 1-5. For each list of words, I typed in the words and he typed in the ones he remembered. I marked the ones he didn't remember (or got wrong) in bold for him to make a shorter list to work on his own. I advised him to study his vocabulary for 10-15 minutes per day, and recommended that he make flashcards. Once he can quiz himself on a word and get it right the first time, I told him to eliminate that word from his pile of vocab cards and continually focus on the words that he did not remember. Today was our last session, but I am confident that he will be successful in his Latin class; he was a joy to work with!
