Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At today's session, the student and I worked on the following: - Context clue exercises. - Continued work on revising brief constructed response. - Determining main idea/thesis from passage."
"Today we took a lot of time to work on the student's essay. After he finished writing the majority of his essay, I gave him a college essay to read that was written by a high school senior. It was a narrative essay I wanted to give him as good example of how to express himself in a narrative style. After he read the essay, we discussed some of its positive points. Afterwards, he had a better understanding of how to write a narrative essay. Next we discussed comparisons which is a topic addressed on the PSAT. We talked about how objects and nouns have to be compared in a parallel manner. We also discussed how adjectives are used as comparatives. After we reviewed all of the material, I gave him some practice questions and he did fairly well. The problems that he struggled with we discussed together. Lastly, I read over his essay and gave him some constructive criticism to consider for revisions. I told him to revise and polish his essay for our next session. I was happy to see that his essay was progressing because initially he had difficulty with the writing prompt."
"Today we began by going over the student's homework. He wrote almost two full pages on the Tour de France, and he did a great job looking up words with his assigned Greek and Latin roots. He had some mistakes involving his grammar and commas, but overall, his spelling has improved and he is more conscious about his capitalization. He corrected the mistakes in his paragraphs about Van Gogh, and then we discussed the symbolism in The Grapes of Wrath. We ended our session by doing vocabulary quizzes on the vocab for Chapters 7 and 8. He has been studying, and we identified the words that he is going to study a little more. For homework, he is going to write about the current state of space exploration, and continue to study his vocabulary and grammar points in French."
