Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued to review material from the first semester. He worked on tricky integrals dealing with several topics at once including separation of variables, partial fractions, and initial value problems. We spent half of the session reviewing implicit differentiation and how to solve related rates problems. Overall, the student seemed to understand the material strongly and have a better understanding of the derivation of the techniques for solving the problems."
"1) We began with math (geometry) and reviewed three lessons: 84 (triangles); 85 (quadrilaterals); and 86 (Make and Test Generalizations). 2) For social studies, the student began to label a map of Asia. She completed most countries and their capitals but did not finish. She still has a few countries to fill in, then move to bodies of water, etc. I think we made progress with our first session."
"The student and I worked on her homework assignment on basic definitive integrals. I also reviewed integral concepts with her as well as area under the curves and calculating areas of even/odd functions."
"Today, we worked with factoring polynomials in order to detect end behaviors of graphs. This is a new unit for them, and yet they are handling the subject with an impressive level of skill. They both have a quiz coming up next week, and I am more than confident that both girls will obtain A's on this diagnostic."
"We worked through the student's review assignment for her test tomorrow on Chapter 7. I saw one good quiz score, and one lower quiz score today; she is improving."
"Today we covered graphing of exponential functions as well as common traits and rules. We also discussed how to determine whether the function is increasing or decreasing relative to positive or negative x values."
"We worked on her history homework. The assignment was to discuss whether or not Martin Luther King Jr. would be proud of the progress we have made for equality. We also worked on her note taking skills."
"We continued to go over addition and subtraction of fractions for a good portion of time. We will continue to practice this until it is hammered into her brain. We then moved onto multiplying and dividing fractions. She has not done this before so we worked slowly. She got better as we went along and we will practice more in our next meeting."
"Specifically covered Chapters 23 for his midterm. After speaking with the student's mother, I was informed that he received a grade higher than what he had been scoring prior to tutoring. He is an extremely intelligent kid, and very much an audio learner."
"The student and I went over exponents. We covered the properties of exponents, negative exponents, and scientific notation in the context of exponents. She has a test on the subject by the end of the week."
"First we recalled what we had learned about optimization and how to find a constraint equation relating two of the variables. Then we got into some new stuff he just started learning which were related rates problems, which are set up in a very similar way as the old optimization ones. We looked at some examples from a handout worksheet he was given and then he did practice problems from his book that his teacher had assigned."
"We worked on functions, specifically inputting functions within functions.
The student is improving. It is clear that he is getting better at remembering and applying key ideas. I'll continue to work on basics because it is definitely helping."
