" My tutoring experience started as far back as I can remember with my very own sister who is 4 years younger than me. I helped her with everything from fractions, to AP homework, to college applications and essays. In high school I was a volunteer peer tutor in subjects ranging from algebra to English, and even to this day my high school friends still send me their essays to proofread! In college I spent 2 years as a student-teacher for a volunteer-run after school arts program in local South Side Chicago elementary schools, where we taught children fundamental concepts and themes in fine art and how to express those in their own art projects. ...

A photo of Hannah who is one of our Seattle Languages tutors
" This work as an educator has given me experience developing age-appropriate lessons in a variety of areas, including reading, writing, science, and math. My cultural agility is the result of interactions with students of various nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Although I would be delighted to tutor many subjects, my passion is English. From an early age, I have been fascinated with words and the way we use them. I would love to help a pupil become attuned to the nuances of a text or express themselves more clearly for a college admissions essay. Besides education, my interests and hobbies include theatre, cooking, ...

With the help of tutors, I was able to overcome difficulties, ultimately enrolling at Cornell University, an Ivy League institution. I am so proud of this and thankful at the same time to my parents and teachers/professors. "However, when I moved out to the US in 1997, I quickly realized that most people speak only one language. For me, it would be extremely fulfilling to help young students learn and develop skills in a foreign language, in my case, French. Other subjects I am particularly interested in are English and History. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in History from Yale University, with a particular emphasis on 20th century European history."

A photo of Kim who is one of our Philadelphia Languages tutors
"I like to speak as much in the target language as possible when I teach as I find it really helps students acquire an in depth understanding of the language and facilitates building confidence in speaking and comprehension. I have an intense love of grammar so it is really gratifying to be able to pass on this knowledge to others. Studying a foreign language early on really opened the world up to me! ."

"I regularly compose short stories, and I have also worked on long non-fiction pieces for publication. My favorite part of the writing process is workshopping with other authors. Peer-editing is very valuable, and my natural inclination toward peer-to-peer guidance led to my interest in tutoring. I love exchanging knowledge with students. I have over four years of tutoring experience at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level, and I enjoy working with younger learners."

"My clients are always expected to be actively engaged during a session, so I will never talk at a student or give away answers. The idea is to cultivate a discussion that encourages the pupil to think critically. Most importantly, I believe that every student needs a comprehensive, cohesive support system. I make sure to communicate with my pupils' parents and teachers so that each of us can better understand the student's needs.."
