Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with the student to go through all his papers, set aside the ones he needed, and prioritize which assignments to do first. Thursday is the last day of the grading period, so we have until then to raise his grades as much as we can. After I analyzed the student's grades and explained what he'd need to make next six weeks in order to pass the semester, he really got motivated."
"We covered a total of 1.5 hours. We reviewed his math and grammar homework, including some missing grammar assignments."
"The student had a number of activities to complete during this session. First, he completed a science assignment which covered creating and interpreting information from Excel graphs. He had to create five different graphs using data provided by his teacher and then answer questions about it. Next, we reviewed for a civics quiz he will be taking tomorrow. I asked him to provide a definition to each term originating from a list from his teacher. After going through each term, I then provided the definitions in no particular order and asked him to provide the proper term. We went through the list until he knew every term. Next, I helped him study for a pre-algebra test he will be taking tomorrow. I gave him review questions from each section in the book, and then he answered them on his tablet. Then we went over his previous math quiz. We reviewed science and he did really well with his studying and should do very well on both quizzes tomorrow. We will review the Spanish test from Friday."
"Today, the student and I began with his Science homework where he had a worksheet on tides to complete. Since the material was new, he needed to refer back to his PowerPoint notes. We talked through some of the concepts to increase understanding. After completion, his knowledge of tides was better than before. Then, we moved on to his Math homework where he had another worksheet to complete. The worksheet reviewed some recent Math concepts, so he completed it with ease. Afterwards, we studied for his upcoming test which covers Chapter 8. Going through the book, I tested his knowledge with some questions from each lesson. At the end of our session, I believe he is ready for his test and will perform well."
"The student and I focused on his upcoming social studies project today. He's off to a great start. We reviewed both his map and presentation for the project. He has a little ways to go yet, but should be in good shape if he spends a little more time on it this weekend. We also spent a little time on math, and he seems to be picking up perimeter concepts quickly."
"The student and I worked on organizing his mathematics binder for class as well as organizing his binder for tutoring. We also talked about the importance of taking notes in the class and to keep separate binders for different subjects. Then, we worked on some of his homework from school and I explained to him the relationship between fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals. He also worked on corrections from his class because he scored in the 70's. When allowed to do the problems by himself, he was able to answer all questions with a little amount of help, which indicates to me that he probably rushed through his quiz in school instead of paying attention to the questions. To catch him up in class and to improve his grades, we will focus on doing his homework in math and science first, and then move on to teaching him topics that he does not know from the beginning of the class this semester, if we have time left at the end of the session."
