Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed practice problems from the verbal section of the test. We also went over test-taking strategies, including crossing out answers we know to be wrong, looking for a root in words we don't know, and starring questions we're unsure of to return to later. I stressed the importance of double-checking answers after completing each section, as he can often fix them the second time around, and of using scratch paper in the math section. If he plans to take the SSAT another time, it might be helpful for him to practice with vocab flashcards, as he did have trouble with some of the words."
"I review the diagnostic exam the student took prior to our session. His weaknesses are in verbal reasoning and the quantitative portion of the exam. He struggled to stay focused in the beginning of the lesson as the concept of the exam was overwhelming. As the session progressed, he began to get comfortable and focus more on the instruction. I taught him some testing taking strategies for the verbal portion of the exam. I taught him new math skills (multiplying/dividing decimals and multiplying/dividing fractions) he was not previously exposed to. I left a practice assignment covering skills taught until next session. For verbal practice, student was left with a list of words to define and use in a sentence for each part of speech."
"I specifically went over materials that the student wanted to go over for his math quiz this week. It was solely on ratios and we had went over a lot of new concepts (cross multiplying, shortcuts to simplifying fractions, etc.). I am seeing progress."
