Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We have specifically covered exponential functions. The student was able to understand the material pretty well. Overall, the session was excellent."
"We covered a review of basic algebra: isolating variables using inverse operations, factoring of polynomials, & FOIL. I gave brief introduction to algebra using log/exponential functions. We reviewed quadratic graphing using the vertex form from last session. I then conducted a new lesson on graphing quadratics in standard form, using h=(-b/2a) and k=f(h). I explained/practiced solving for x-intercepts and y-intercepts. We then had a brief SAT algebra-math review."
"The student got a better grade than before; however there is still room for improvement. We started on the next chapter's homework, which was about parabolas. We went over completing the square to find the vertex, line of symmetry, minimum and maximum values, and decreasing and increasing values. We also used the vertex formula (-b/2a) to find these values as well. She will try to get her test so we can go over it together."
"This was the second session during the student's week off of school. We finished his worksheet on graphing/sketching polynomials by finding the zeros/intercepts. Then, I decided to review past lessons by giving him questions from the textbook. We worked on dividing polynomials, expanding through Pascal's triangle, finding the inverse of a function, and finding zeros through the rational zero theorem. He did pretty well on all of the review, some with little to no review. Other than a few minor math mistakes in adding/subtracting positive/negative numbers, he solved the questions I gave him correctly."
"The student and I worked on binomial expansion and Pascal's triangle. This was easy for her once I explained how to use the triangle to get the coefficients of the terms in the expansion, and how the exponents follow an ascending/descending pattern. She had the most problems with visualizing a word problem, but drawing a bigger picture helped her immensely. I also briefly quizzed her for her ASL test the following day. Overall it was a very positive session. She was bright and outgoing and a pleasure to work with."
"The student is learning about sets. I helped her understand unions and intersections as "or" and "and." I explained how to set up Venn diagrams and use the union equation. Then, I reviewed basic probability with her for her next homework, and helped her create an amortization table for a previous homework."
