Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had the student read two pages aloud from a 2nd grade novel. His expression is excellent and he was able to read clearly. He points to the words as he reads. We reviewed blends like "ai, ar, ay, ch, ea, ee, ie, igh." I taught him the sounds of each blend, had him write them out and think of words that have those blends. I had him make index cards for each of the blends. We did two pages in his own reading workbook about who/when/where information in a story."
"This 1.5 hour session focused on the construction of an essay comparing the books "Ender's Game" and "Run." The student and tutor went over suggested corrections and areas of improvement. The student seems comfortable with the basic comparisons of these two novels. Following the essay, the student and tutor covered vocabulary and terms essential to decoding novels. The student and tutor reviewed plot, summary, theme, mood, tone, and messages of a novel. The student is beginning to prepare for the start of the school year and is beginning to read assigned novels."
"The student and I studied the Rocky Mountains region, read a bit about how the Plains Indians lived, and read more of his biography on Paul Revere."
"I reviewed the Most Dangerous Game exercise from the prior session, and we made slight edits together. We moved on to reviewing for the student's Global Studies essay. We went through sections 18-1 and 18-3 discussing the Muslim, Turkish, and Hindi influence on the Moghul empire. Additionally, we talked about the different sultans and why the Taj Mahal was built. His test is Friday, and he seems like he has a good grasp on the material."
"Today, I met with the girls at their home instead of at the library. This helped both girls' focus immensely. For the first hour, I worked with Student 1 on her multiplication tables. She does not have these memorized, but can work out the answers to all of them. I want to continue to work on these so that she can have them all memorized. The second hour, Student 2 and I read a book together. She does well with encouragement."
"We reviewed the student's homework for reading, spelling, and some of the math. He did well on the worksheets for the sounds of Rr, Ww, and Cc."
