Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is really ready for the writing skills assessment. She attended a workshop last week and got more information on the assessment and saw more honest assessments of essays. This was a very good opportunity for her, and I am thrilled that she went ahead and put time into that workshop. It also helps me to development an assignment for her. Together, we reviewed all the material she picked up at the workshop, and we studied it for intrinsic value. That was extremely helpful. She learned that the spelling concern was not as huge as we thought, but to be on the safe side, we are still going ahead with our spelling work. She did well on today's test I think a comprehensive test of spelling during this week will help her awareness. I am going to meet with her at least two times this week before the assessment."
"The first student and I went over an assignment he had for class. His teacher wanted him to write a story about an inspiring event that occurred in his life. He had written and submitted a draft of this assignment. However, his teacher returned it and asked that he use more descriptive words. So I worked with him on describing the football field, the football, the uniform, and his feelings of victory when he won. Additionally, he bought a book that he thought looked interesting and is reading it on his own. We read a couple of chapters of that book together today so I could help him with his comprehension. The second student is reading "To Kill a Mockingbird." We read through a couple of chapters together. Additionally, I showed him study guides and resources online that he could use to navigate the book, and where he could go to find practice study questions to assess his comprehension of the story. He appears to be a bright student and is doing well in his English class."
"We covered a presentation regarding performance management, employee calibration Excel worksheet, mid-year check-in form for employee evaluation, etc."
"We worked on a five-paragraph essay. I demonstrated what it would take to write a five-paragraph essay for a college class. We also worked on the formation of the paragraph for her assignment. We also discussed what she needed to do for her paragraph for her assignment for next week and we looked at the possible journal topics. She will work on the journal entry and email it to me so that I can go over it."
"We continued with chapter 2 of the grammar book. We are covering simple and complete subjects. The student said that the book (and grammar generally) is boring, but this is the one her mother wants to use."
"Student 1 and I went over essay writing and outline composition. He has started reading Of Mice and Men, and we went through possible essay topics we could use to compose our own essay about the book. Student 2 and I then went through his homework assignment due today, and Student 1 went through and edited it for grammar and gave him suggestions in terms of articulating his thoughts in a succinct manner."
