Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We read from "The Cricket in Times Square" as part of the student's reading assignment and then we did math review, using her book from last year as a guide. The student likes math a lot and was active in suggesting topics to go over and coming up with problems. I realized that we needed to go back to the concept of place values and powers of ten."
"Today we reviewed exponential functions and arithmetic and geometric sequences. We also began review, looking through an exam and creating a list of topics to review in the coming weeks. She has a set of exponential function problems to complete before Wednesday when we meet again. We will spend half the time on current classroom content and half the time on review from now until the exam in June."
"Worked on finding opposites of numbers, identifying integers, graphing integers, ordering integers from least to greatest, identifying integers to represent different situations, coordinate plane, and graphing ordered pairs in a coordinate plane."
"I think the student did a great job today and started to connect all the dots on factoring. I hope it all comes back to her on the test tomorrow because sometimes that clarity comes and goes when you first pick it up. We worked forwards and backwards on some factors of the form x - k building it up to third and fourth order polynomials. She understood what finding a zero meant in terms of synthetic division and substitution as well as in long division of polynomials; she understood what it meant to graph it; she understood what would be intelligent guesses on factors of polynomials and in factoring general quadratic functions."
"Today, we started covering the beginning of the theory on integration. Specifically we derived how to find the area bounded by a function and the x-axis. The student and I derived how to find the LRAM, MRAM, and RRAM methods of Riemann sums, and also covered how to find the area using the Trapezoidal Method. I briefly covered the upcoming content before ending the night."
"The student and I covered some review material which included improper fraction/mixed number conversions, fraction operations, order of operations, rounding and estimation, circle geometry, square geometry, ratios, finding unknown variables, and sales tax."
