Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"As our final session together before the SSAT, the student and I worked on a variety of subjects. We first began with a review of analogies and synonyms by reviewing the practice problems he had completed and by doing some additional examples together. Next, we spent time review various math concepts. Based on previously demonstrated weaknesses, we focused primarily on averages, percentages, and algebra. As a sixth grader, the student has covered very little algebra in school so many of these skills are new for him. As such, we spent time learning various algebra skills through practice problems. Finally we spent the last portion of our session reviewing the format of the SSAT (e.g. sections, number of questions, allotted time) and discussing test-taking strategies (e.g. guessing vs. leaving a question blank, eliminating obviously incorrect answer choices, pre-writing strategies)."
"We covered the reading portion of the test and had him focus on the Main Idea, Author's Tone and Context Clues. He used more time than would be allowed but he seemed to get better at answering the questions. I have also emailed the student some additional strategies and the next homework from me for Thursday. We have also got a session scheduled for Friday."
"Since we only have three sessions left, we decided to focus on reading and vocabulary. We did three reading comprehension passages together and worked on strategies for understanding passages through skimming. We then added 20 words to the student's vocabulary and tested his recall with some practice questions. We finished the session with some analogy practice and basic algebra review."
