Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday was our last session - the student's final exam is today. We covered the remaining topics she had listed when we first talked, kind of a clean-up session after spending the first two days reviewing the subjunctive. These topics were 1) desde and desde hace, 2) commands, 3) the se impersonal and passive voice, and 4) the relative pronouns 'que,' 'quien,' 'lo que,' and 'cuyo.' She did really well. For each topic I had prepared an information sheet and printed out related exercises. Doing the exercises seemed to help solidify the concepts while also bringing out questions as to nuances of the concept's usage, as with desde and desde hace, when we discussed how "at 4 or 5 years old" can be considered a fixed, concrete starting point in time, and thus take "desde.""
"She has made great progress since our last two sessions. Her knowledge from memory of verb conjugations in the subjunctive for regular and irregular verbs has improved dramatically since we began working on that area specifically as well as since I had assigned her to practice verb endings on her own time for at least 20-30 minutes a week for the purpose of rote memorization. This session was a review ahead of her midterm this Thursday, and we did more practice with subjunctive concepts rather than just memorization. In addition, we went over her course-specific study guide to address the exam in full breadth (verb tenses, conjugations, present perfect/past participles). I was very happy to see her progress and mentioned this to her mother as well."
"Today we reviewed several Spanish 3 concepts such as the Plusperfect, conditional, and imperfect subjunctive tenses. She had a little trouble at first with the "Pluscuamperfecto" tense but after a little practice, she felt a little more comfortable. Today's session was very productive."
