Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student will be taking the SAT this Saturday, so today we discussed general SAT strategies, particularly sentence completion, math strategies (PITA/Picknum) and essay structure."
"Today is the last session before the student's SAT on Sunday, and what was covered was critical reading and pacing strategies."
"The student had completed a practice test during her spring break for us to go over. We went over the incorrect answers and found that math continued to be her weakest subject. We therefore focused our attention to this area. I gave her some time to go over the questions herself and then had her explain to me how she attempted them to ensure that she wasn't just agreeing with my explanations and not fully understanding the underlying concepts. Many of the mistakes she made were minor mistakes, i.e., she failed to answer the question exactly as they wanted or tried to take shortcuts that were not valid. Many of the portions she got wrong were ones we had gone over before, so we reiterated the exponent rules, line rules, and the approach for list questions. We also went over her essay. The student is doing a better job of organizing her essay in terms of the paragraphs and has improved her example choices. Now she can work on increasing her analysis and decreasing her summary. I pointed out the "general" statements she made throughout her essay and gave her tips on how to increase the analytical portions instead. Finally, we went over the vocab questions she got wrong. She hasn't had a chance to completely memorize the vocab list, so I emphasized the importance of memorizing this list by next week. I will be spending significant time quizzing her on this in order to ensure that it is learned. She will also go over her critical reading answers and will find the "supporting sentences" for each incorrectly answered question so that she can better understand the mindset of the test writers. Finally, she will do 2 math sections to go over the concepts we re-emphasized in today's session."
