"Today the student and I continued working on Algebra I review. We started where we left off last time working on exponent rules. We began by reviewing negative exponents because she said that she was still a little mixed up from last time so I did a few examples with her until she got it. We then went into division exponent rules, which again, she understood after a few examples to practice. We moved on to working with polynomials and started with basic addition and subtraction. We finished up by introducing factoring and using FOIL to expand binomials. Overall she did very well this session. She made errors here and there but corrected herself quickly if I pointed them out. She didn't seem to struggle with any concept so we managed to cover quite a few topics during our session today. We will continue next time with a expansive review on factoring because that is typically a large topic in Algebra II classes."
"The student and I worked on some selected algebra topics in this session. I tried to get a handle on what he already knows so that we can efficiently prepare him for algebra next year. We talked about the properties of the squares and cubes of simple numbers, and some patterns that emerge with exponential growth. We also worked on radical numbers, how they are combined, and how to simplify larger radicals. The last thing that we worked on was how to solve simple algebraic equations. I believe that he has had some experience with this material before. Next time we will work on these some more so he has additional practice, and I will explain some of the simplification rules in more detail."
"The student and I continued working with linear equations and how to create and manipulate them. We went from just working with rate of change and starting point, to understanding that those have implications outside of real life situations, and apply directly to lines and their equations. This involved starting to work with tables. A big realization for her was that these tables were just a different representation of the graphs that she is used to seeing. She is getting better and better at abstract thought, and not guessing as much when she has evidence in front of her. Next session, we will get into slope and y-intercept and make the connection with rate and starting point."
