Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session dealt with finding specific words on each page of the book "Boy, not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis. After finding each word, instructions for this part of the assignment included quoting the text excerpt, writing the meaning from context clues, writing the official definition, defining the part of speech, as well as writing a synonym. He effectively gave me a summary of the first six chapters. I kept him interested in the vocab by asking first what he thought each word meant before we looked up the definitions."
"We talked about his favorite types of writing and what he is working on in school. We began planning a story about James who has a problem with a library book. We began writing the story about James' library book problem. Next time we will continue the story by adding details like: Where is James when he finds out that he has the wrong book? How does he feel about this? What does he do next?"
"Today we did some practice with proofreading to help the student with her grammar so that she can strengthen her writing. The errors we practiced proofreading were sentence fragments, subject verb agreement, pronoun usage, and run-on sentences. We also worked on finding errors involving possessives, contractions, and verb tenses."
"Review of previous essay assignment and comparison of first and second essays. Discussion of upcoming research assignment and review of previously discussed rules for writing a successful paper. Review/revise research assignment."
"The student finished up the rest of the algebra final he was working on. This means that he has now seen and completed every major concept in algebra I. I then gave him a persuasive essay prompt and he thought of an idea right away. I'll have him finish up the essay over break for homework."
"The student has experienced several positive changes in his dissertation over the past two weeks, including the ability to narrow the focus of his topic. He seems very excited about where his work is heading and has built up great momentum to continue in this trajectory. We talked about the tasks he will need to complete over the next couple of months so that he can begin to chart a realistic writing schedule. We also discussed his Statement of Purpose and talked about his immediate next steps. It has been a pleasure to work with him, and I am very excited to see him accomplishing his goals."
