Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was a good session. We continued our study of solutions. We discussed the unit of the cubic centimeter and special properties of water such as hydrogen bonding. We then discussed homogenous vs heterogeneous solution. We defined colloid and suspension."
"Today we got acquainted and worked on some practice problems the student had suggested. I kept breaking the problem down over and over again until it stuck. The student has around 4 chapters left in his chemistry class and it will be difficult. However, if I keep this same approach to problems I feel that we will be able to persevere. My plan is to generalize each concept for a given unit in the first 40 mins of tutoring and then work on relevant practice problems for the remainder of the session."
"Today the student worked on her two chemistry assignments. She did very well with the ph material. There was a little confusion on a few of the problems on acid properties. It was the wording of the questions, so she will be talking to her teacher on exactly what she was looking for. We will continue to work on this."
"This was a solid review session. We reviewed a few different quizzes the student had and I helped clear up his questions and show him why he got certain problems wrong. This was a good mix of both conceptual material along with typical general chemistry I equations."
"We did practice questions on gas law first. Then we went through theories of solution, solute and solvent. We also did some molarity calculations and the preparation of solution with fixed concentration and volume. Next session we'll cover the thing she learned in class and also do some practice questions on solutions."
"The focus of this session was chemistry. The student and I worked on her prelab for an upcoming experiment about different kinds of reactions. We discussed single replacement, double replacement, combustion, decomposition, and synthesis reactions. We discussed examples and specifically how they applied to the lab. Then the student and I spent the rest of session on reviewing how to names acids for upcoming quiz the student had. We also set up a system to make the memorization she needed to do for easier and less overwhelming. Specifically we identified what exactly she had to memorize and what names she could figure out from other molecules."
