Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began this session by briefly reviewing situations in which you use the subjunctive in Spanish. I gave the student a packet that detailed the verbs, diagrammed a subjunctive sentence, illustrated a couple subjunctive sentences, and explained when not to use the subjunctive. From there we spent the majority of the rest of the session on sequence of tenses. Another sheet in the packet explained when to use the present, present perfect, imperfect, and pluperfect subjunctive tenses. I came prepared with a few worksheets, so that after each tense, we spent time working out a few sample sentences together. He seemed to grasp the ideas of when to use each tense. I briefly covered subjunctive with adverbial clauses at the end of the session. I left him with the packet of worksheets, so he can continue to practice forming these tenses in sample sentences. Remaining topics to cover include se impersonal/passive voice, lo que/cuyo, desde/desde hace, and commands."
"Today the student and I studied for his test tomorrow on the future and conditional tenses. He did very well with his practice questions overall. He understands the material and answers the questions quickly, but sometimes he makes simple errors. He is very motivated to learn Spanish and was engaged throughout the session. I suggested to him to slow down, read the entire question, and then review his answer afterwards to prevent errors. I also suggested that he circle the questions he initially got wrong and review those in depth prior to the test. I also prepared some practice questions on the future perfect so that he could practice. I recommended that he continue to do practice questions. I also showed him two Spanish language apps that he can practice with during the week. He received an A- on his essay homework from last week, which was great progress as he had received a B- on his last essay homework. This was a great session, and he appears more confident in his abilities."
