Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First meeting with the student. We looked at three short essays she had to write using the future and conditional tenses. We edited them and corrected them on her computer. With the remaining 15 minutes, we did a verb conjugation timed test activity. We will begin meeting on Mondays, alternating between the student's two houses."
"Student 1 worked hard on language arts. We read two stories and answered comprehension questions. We also worked on and finished a homework assignment, which was a Chinese poem. Student 2 completed his homework and wrote a story. I then gave him a sentence starter to a story which seemed to help. He was given a homework assignment to draw a picture of my "secret power'. We will write a story about his drawing next session."
"Today, the student needed help with her math homework. She was unfamiliar with organizing the addition and subtraction of expressions. We talked about doing the opposite function to each side of the equation. Then we talked about solving inequalities and how it's important to flip the inequality sign. Finally, I helped her to organize her math notebook."
"This was the first time I worked with this student. We worked on his geometry math review. He had a relatively good grasp of concepts, but sometimes needed to recheck his work. We also reviewed vocabulary words and definitions for his quiz, coming up with strategies to remember certain unfamiliar words. Last, we edited parts of his history paper and talked about ways to improve his writing skills."
"Final session, we spent the first 2 hours working on writing the essay, more specifically on developing a writing style that can be transferred to the test on test day, thus allowing the student to focus more on the quality of his content than the form of his essay. We also spoke for a while on reading comprehension, as well as how to best attack both the test on test day, as well as preparing for the test itself. "
"1. I introduced the student to U.S. coins and their values. 2. We counted by 1s using pennies, by 5s using nickels and by 10s using dimes. 3. Addition flash cards. 4. "My favorite Things" booklet: the student completed sentences that began with statements like, "My favorite song is..." 5. I gave his father a list of 312 words that the student can practice spelling over the course of the school year. I also included a homework worksheet with math and reading/writing assignments for the week."
"We continued working through the math section today. We've also been going over the writing section."
"The student and I focused on math today. He continues to work on word problems, ratios and fractions. He is going out of town for spring break so I showed him how to do Sudokus and recommended that he do at least one or two Sudokus a night while on break to help build his creative problem solving muscles."
"This was our first session. As such, we covered the student's growth goals, diagnosed where she stands, and came up with an action plan to make our time most effective given that she has a month before she takes her exam. She also completed the English and writing portion of a practice exam. We discussed the importance of making use of planning time when she tackles the writing portion of the exam."
"The student has an upcoming assessment so we covered the following topics in preparation: parallel lines, perpendicular lines, Pythagorean theorem, the distance formula, and the midpoint formula. As a review, we covered linear systems of equations. I feel that she is well prepared for her upcoming assessment."
"The student and I worked on studying for her upcoming AP exam in chemistry. We went over how to calculate rates of reactions and we discussed specific trends in the periodic table. She has been doing the reading I suggested previously and said that has been helping a lot."
"Today I worked with the student to get an idea of her skill level for the SAT. We started by going over the math section she had just completed with her previous tutor. We then did a math and a reading practice section and reviewed basic strategies for both. We spent the rest of the session focusing on the essay portion, practicing both specific and general tips. I asked she try to complete one math practice session for the next day's session."
