Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I continued working on multi-step word problems. We mainly focused on money, and I could tell that the concepts made her stop and think a little more. This was especially true when she would have to do problems like $20 - $12.83, where she had dollars minus cents. We also worked on speed facts with multiplication, addition and subtraction."
"The student had a review packet for a test that we went through together. Much of it was on reducing fractions by factoring out binomials/trinomials and cancelling out like factors. The student seemed very confident by the end of the session."
"I believe that the student is sufficiently prepared for the test given the three sessions that we had. We reviewed the questions that she had missed on the Math and Science sections of two of the tests. We concluded the session by discussing how she should plan her next two weeks leading up to the test and also by reviewing strategies."
"The student and I worked on an essay assigned in his English class. We completed an outline that is due tomorrow, and then wrote an introduction for the essay. He's definitely ready to write his rough draft."
"We worked on work, energy and power problems. The student gets the concepts pretty well but still needs work determine which equation to use when, so in our next session we will do more problems to practice using the different equations."
"We corrected a wordy poem and made it more concise. Then we started to work on a poem of her own (using descriptive language, metaphors, similes, rhyme, etc.), which she is completing it for homework. We also worked on some spelling and vocabulary. I was there from 3:15 to 4:15."
"We discussed strategies for the essay section. The student has good control of vocabulary and sentence structure, but struggles with organization of the essay. We reviewed strategies for the writing multiple choice, which showed improvement."
"I helped the student finalize a few points in preparation for her midterm. We also began work on one particular calculation, which she will send to me and I will continue to work on by email. Her midterm is next week, so we will meet again the week of Oct. 22."
"We continued to progress through the student's paper, focusing on well-rounded introductions, academic word choice, and eliminating wordiness. The student continues to improve in her approach to and quality of academic writing. "
"Today the student and I finished reviewing for his math final! We covered all of graphing equations (slope between 2 points, intercepts, parallel lines and perpendicular lines) as well as simplifying square roots. The student is really doing an excellent job! The only hitch we hit was on some math operations while getting equations into function format, but we did some extra problems and he got it down perfectly."
"We went over tonight's homework, which was verifying equations, simplifying, and understanding identities. We also got through most of her homework for tomorrow night. She will talk to her teacher about what she needs to make up from the last unit, and we will work on that next time."
"We started working on math today. I gave him a short diagnostic test and of course he did great!! We went over vocabulary and noted the differences in the American vs. English verbiage (i.e. PEMDAS.) I gave him homework - and we will meet again next Sunday afternoon!!"
