Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked through practice tests under time constraints. We corrected her mistakes, discussed alternative techniques, and addressed weak points. She is a very strong student."
"In today's session, we began by reviewing important grammatical concepts that are often incorporated in the SAT writing section, namely parallelism, dangling participles, and subject-verb/pronoun-antecedent agreement. We then went through strategies for identifying sentence errors questions, improving sentences questions, and improving paragraphs questions. We discussed the similarities and differences between improving paragraphs questions in the writing section and reading passage comprehension questions in the reading section. After doing writing section practice questions together, we switched gears to begin discussing the ACT science section. I briefly explained the structure of the section and the three main types of passages: data analysis, experimental procedure/research studies, and conflicting viewpoints. We then began going through a section together. I stressed the importance of working quickly, as the time limit significantly increases the difficulty of the section. I also noticed he would sometimes misread the question or answer choices in such a way that, even though he understood the concepts being tested, he would have missed the question because of a simple misunderstanding. I cautioned him to make certain of what the question was asking and to read the answer choices carefully before answering. After working on the science section, we spent the remaining time on the SAT math section. We went right into practice problems, as he said that would give him the most valuable experience for the section. I tried to emphasize the importance of connecting the information given with what the question is asking, drawing on mathematical concepts as necessary. I also tried to clarify mathematical concepts for him as we went."
"This was our last session and we focused on the reading section. We went through 2 passages together and talked through the answers, discussing why answers were right or wrong. The student feels confident about the ACT in general and I also believe that he will do well. He has shown excellent improvement throughout our lessons and I know that will show on the test"
