"The student and I covered Math and Reading in this session. As expected, the student did very well on the reading sections of the test, especially when the passages were fiction. She struggled on one particular passage however, related to choice architecture (i.e., how the number and structure of choices impacts consumer behavior). This passage contained a lot of references to statistics, percentages, and numbers, which is why I think she struggled. The student doesn't have a good intuition yet about fractions and percentages (which we are working on), and I want to see how she does with other nonfiction passages to get a better feel for how to help her on these. With our math practice, we continued working on the practice test. The student continued to have some difficulty with the same concepts that we had practiced last session (e.g., fractions, percentages, some geometry). We will continue to work on these issues. I think the best path forward is to continue to practice math and help her understand the concepts in an intuitive way. (For example, when we were talking about number lines, I placed objects on the floor and we walked a certain number of "paces" between them. I think this helped her visualize the problem in a different way); mixing practice with explanations and videos will be a good approach. For homework, I asked the student to complete the reading section (5 questions) and the last math section."
"The student took a verbal diagnostics and I timed her. She scored in the 90+ percentile in verbal the 2nd time. She feels that the timing made her a little nervous. She has improved from taking the tests multiple times. She is going to take new verbal and reading diagnostics and time herself so that she can get used to being timed and also be exposed to the new material. The goal is to score in the 90 percentile the first time. We also reviewed her essay samples. She is going to write a thesis statement and 3 points to develop for the topics that I gave her."
"For today's session the student practiced writing an essay to prepare her for the writing part of the standardized test. I made sure to provide her with tips on how to create an outline and properly structure an essay. I emphasized the importance of organizing her thoughts and giving details. She did very well with this assignment and I will continue to practice essay writing with her. In addition, I had the student look over the quantitative reasoning and math achievement sections. The student struggled the most with the math word problems. I will work with the student on solving math problems that are unfamiliar to her."
