Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began today's tutoring session with a journal entry. Today's journal prompt: "If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do? Why?" After he wrote his journal entry, we moved on to vocabulary development. To check for information retention, I gave the student a chapter 5 review quiz. Out of the 10 vocabulary words, he correctly defined 8 of them (80%). After completing the chapter 5 review quiz, he and I moved on to review the 10 new vocabulary words in chapter 6. After we finished reviewing the new vocabulary words and their definitions, I gave him a twenty-question quiz on chapter 6 (to check for understanding). Out of the twenty questions, he correctly answered 17 of them (85%). After he finished taking his chapter 6 quiz, we moved on to grammar. Specifically, he completed a "Using Commas" Worksheet (p. 99). On this specific worksheet, he correctly answered 9 out of the 18 questions (50%). We will be working on commas more in future lessons. To conclude today's tutoring session, I had him write a paragraph about his home. Before he actually wrote the paragraph, I had him write a list of 6 adjectives that describe his living space. As with his previous writing assignments, he used the 6 adjectives in his paragraph. After he was finished writing, he read his written passage to me aloud. He is very good at turning a phrase. His descriptive sentences are very vivid, and his use of varied adjectives is excellent. He is a very bright student who is motivated to learn and improve. He is always attentive and focused on the task at hand. Thus our tutoring sessions are always very productive."
"I went over a paper the student is rewriting for her English 101A class. We focused on structure and content, and made sure her paper met MLA standards."
"We started and finished an outline for his division and categorization essay. We then went over his economics homework."
