"We continued working on the student's summer reading project; she had done further research on aphorisms and we continued developing her essay on Steinbeck's "Cannery Row.""
"The student sent over her essay for me to take a look at. I read through and made some suggestions that I thought would make her ideas stronger. Overall, her essay was very strong, and she presented her ideas very well. I saw vast improvement from when I first saw her work."
"Today we reviewed previous material on persuasive writing. I gave the student an essay and instructed him to find all the persuasive writing techniques used in the essay. Next we discussed how rhetorical elements are used in the writing process. I allowed him to copy down the rhetorical questions for future assignments. I explained examples of some of the rhetorical elements to the student. We discussed the different styles of writing. I clarified a few styles that were not clear to him. After giving him a real world example he had a good understanding. We also discussed transitions. I explained the importance of transitions between sentences and between paragraphs. I told him how transitions bring unity and cohesion to papers. He did an activity that allowed him to practice writing transitions. I gave him tips on how to use phrases from the previous sentence to create smooth transitions. I told him we will continue practicing transitions in order to strengthen this area of his writing. We looked at some PSAT prep questions. We focused on the improving sentences section. Lastly we looked at a class writing assignment and I gave him tips on how to transition from his outline to writing the paper. Next session I will look over the paper and give him advice to make it better."
