Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For the first half of today's session, the student and I practiced his essay but approached it differently. After he completed the essay prompt under timed conditions, I reviewed the essay with him, providing feedback about how specific parts of his argument could be improved or strengthened, and then I asked him to write a second version (not necessarily rewrite) of the essay using the same prompt. His second essay was markedly better. It could still be improved, but it was pleasing to see that he had applied the advice given immediately. We subsequently focused on critical reading, working through sentence completion and passage-based reading questions. He chose the right answer for every single question, and his explanations were thorough and sound. He noted that he felt far more comfortable with critical reading than he had felt prior. We have scheduled a couple of additional sessions\, and, between our sessions, I have advised both him and his father that he should take diagnostics to better his mental endurance for the day of the test."
"We reviewed vocabulary and began to work on SAT math. We discussed strategies for learning vocab. Overall, the student is doing well, and I can tell that she is spending time learning the vocab."
"The student and I have been working on SAT prep. He's unfamiliar with the format and grading of the test, so we talked a little bit about that--I stressed to him in particular the importance of skipping the problems he does not know, re: penalties for guessing. Thus far, we've worked through a couple of math sections and the start of a couple of reading and grammar sections. Next time I plan to focus on particular types of problems (rather than a cross-section) so that he can start to build his confidence in certain areas. He did quite well on the vocabulary questions."
