Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started today's tutoring lesson with a review of the parts of speech: noun, adjective, verb, pronoun, proper noun possessive noun, tense (past, present, and future), conjunction, and colon (punctuation). We then moved on to vocabulary development. Then, I gave the student a review quiz on the next chapter. The student did great! After we went over the new vocabulary words, I gave the student a twenty-question quiz to check for understanding. After reviewing the idioms in section 3, the student completed some grammar worksheets. Following the completion of the two grammar worksheets, we concluded today's tutoring session with a brief writing assignment. First, I had the student write down six adjectives that described him. After he completed the list of six adjectives, I had him write a paragraph about himself. Overall it was a great session."
"Today there was a myriad of homework options for the student to work on, so I tried to take stock of what seemed to be most immediate and also what was causing the most anxiety for her. We spent most of our time studying for her English class. The character recognition is what seemed to be giving her the most trouble. So, we went through and noted the characters that she has already memorized, set those aside, and then made a list of everyone else left (yet to memorize). I helped her make a list of all the characters, but put in categories: gods/goddesses, monsters, "bad" humans, and "good" humans. It was my intent to break the set down into smaller groupings, which would make memorization more feasible. She seemed encouraged and I left her with instruction to go over the list several times after our session. We also began work on an essay that is due next week in the same class. About the Odyssey, the essay requires the student to discuss family attributes of Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus in order to talk about the role of family. She shared with me the two character aspects she wanted to write about (loneliness and cunning) and together we began to look for sections of text that might support these aspects for each character. She had a worksheet to help her with this and I also gave her a piece of paper with suggestions of what pages to look at."
"Focus of this session was homework assignment for English. We worked through paragraph formation, sentence order and word usage."
