Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had completed one more of the diagnostic tests for the SSAT, and we went over the answers. She also completed one written practice, writing for 25 minutes on a specific prompt. I read her story aloud to review it. It was engaging with a clear beginning, middle, and end. She had many descriptive words and details that made her story easy to "see" as the story unfolded. She used dialogue mixed with descriptive scenes. I feel that she is a strong writer, ready for the writing portion of the assessment. I then showed her the Learning Tools on the test prep site, and she completed one practice test in vocabulary. She scored an 82%, which she said she was happy about. She will try to complete one practice test each day this week (in vocabulary). This will increase her exposure to new words, and give her practice recognizing the relationship between words, which is difficult when there are two close answers to choose from."
"During this session, the student and I went over a math test that she had taken since our previous session. We also discussed the test as a whole. We spent some time going over box and whisker charts and stem and leaf diagrams so that she would be more knowledgeable of these for the test. We also took some time to go over the essay prompt that she had been given. We discussed certain terms that were not ideal for formal writing and ways to improve the essay that she had written. In previous sessions, we had been devoting much of our time to reading, and that very much showed in her results. As a strategy for the upcoming test, we plan to review all areas, but we will focus on math and emphasizing the analogies portion of the test."
"We did a series of arithmetic practice problems because I want to make sure he is adequately prepared as possible. The student has a very solid understanding of the core concepts, so I'm trying to help him apply his understanding in the most effective manner."
