Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we spent most of the session reviewing homework that she had done and continuing to practice those concepts: ratios and percent problems. I then introduced her to proportion problems and spent a little bit of time on those before moving onto averages. She seems to understand percents and ratios pretty well, so I won't be working with her as much with those, except for review as we go forward. Next time, we'll review the average problems and try to cover a couple more math topics. At the end of the session, we did a little bit of work on the writing section (finding errors). She did fairly well on this part but could use practice just to get more familiar with the type of problems because they are unique. We meet next in two days, so I didn't assign too much homework."
"We went through math problems that she had found and highlighted in her SAT prep book-namely covering graphs, the coordinate planes, reflections, angles, and arc lengths. We went over a few new concepts and refreshed on some things that were a bit rusty."
"The student and I worked on the sentence revision questions for the writing section of the exam today. We used his prep book's question bank for questions. The areas we looked at involved reflexive pronouns, correct prepositions, pronoun agreement, dangling/misplaced modifiers, semicolons, and coordinating conjunctions. Because the test is only a week away, we only focused on the difficult questions. For these, the student managed to answer correctly about half of the time; however, he was a very quick learner when we reviewed the explanations behind the concepts. While we only went though about ten questions, we used those questions to have very constructive lessons on issues that will appear all over the SAT. On Monday, we will turn our attention back to the essay portion of the exam."
"Today we concentrated on the basic rules of exponents and root functions, as well as how to identify like terms. We have been working on the strategy of taking a breath and planning out each problem before starting calculations. We spent the last fifteen minutes working less challenging vocab problems. I asked the student to concentrate on his vocab practice before our next session. On Saturday, we will finish working through his diagnostic test."
"The student and I discussed questions on her PSAT that focused on vocabulary and reading comprehension. We also spent time on some math questions related to algebraic expressions and interpreting charts/ graphs, and using proportional reasoning."
"The student and I did fabulous work on math today. She is starting to see some patterns on the SAT, and all she needs to do is make fewer small mistakes, and she'll be golden! We also talked about strategies for college interviews."
"We reviewed the rest of Practice Exam 1, and went over more math problems in detail in Practice Exam 2. We will cover the remainder of the math sections in Exam 2. Also recommended additional prep materials."
"Worked with the student on new practice SAT exam. Outlined a response to a sample essay prompt, and worked through Reading, Math, and m-c Writing sections. He struggled with some concepts on the more difficult math questions, but otherwise did well."
"We covered vocabulary today, which he struggled a bit with. I gave him some test taking skills to deal with the vocab section and he was able to pick up on it more. I told him to take an practice SAT timed tonight, so we can go over it tomorrow."
"The student is getting better, but he still needs a lot of work on the grammar sections. While we worked on these sections, he steadily improved. He might take a practice test over this weekend. He works diligently--he will do well."
"The student and I worked on a practice test he recently took. We looked over all his incorrect responses through the 10 sections. Composite score for him was an 1810 and he rescheduled his SAT exam for March that he was scheduled to take on Saturday."
"Reviewed final SAT reading homework. Student was able to finish within time limits while showing improvement. Began lessons on SAT math, introducing basic approach to assessing and categorizing question types. Worked through an SAT math section."
