Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on his mastery of the SAT reading comprehension sections, including his strategy and any vocabulary words he did not know. We will work on grammar for the next session."
"The student and I focused on some grammar and math questions in our session today. He finds the grammar questions that are based on a passage the hardest, so I helped him understand the reasoning behind the ones he had encountered in the last practice exam he had worked on. We then went over one of the math sections from that practice exam, in which we worked on how to solve all of the questions which he had trouble with. He still needs help with vocabulary. I told him to copy down any unknown words that he comes across while taking the next practice exam, and to learn them by next weekend when I tutor him again. As for writing in general, he seems to already have some of the basics down; now I just need to see how he is able to use them. I showed him the chart in his book that describes what types of essays get each of the scores, so that he should strive toward the higher level score goals. I also showed him the example essays the book has as well, so he can see what types of things to include in his essay, and what things to avoid. A problem he has with taking practice exams is that he attempts to answer every single question, in order. I told him that skipping answers is OK, and that answering the easiest questions first is always a good idea. If he does this, he should have more time towards the end of a section to work on the questions that take longer to figure out. His homework is to take another timed practice exam, including the essay."
"We started today's session reviewing a practice from the SAT guide. The student continued to show improvement in his score from the previous practice exam, improving by 40 points. He improved in all areas. He also showed great improvement in the writing section, and showed much improvement in his essay compared to the previous practice exam. We spent the majority of today's session focused on the Math section, and pinpointed specific areas that he struggled with in the last exam: function notation/evaluation and absolute value/range problems. The student was provided with extra practice problems in these areas to complete for homework. We also focused on utilizing strategies such as picking numbers and backsolving to address problems that appear too challenging. We also discussed the guessing/omission strategy, in order to minimize lost points from being penalized for wrong answers. We spent the last part of the session reviewing high yield topics in the writing section. In addition to the problems sets on the above targeted topic areas in Math, he was also given an additional problem set of SAT problems covering high yield topics in Algebra, which will be reviewed next session. He was also given the assignment to go back and review the Critical Reading section of the last practice test and mark any questions he got wrong and does not understand the right answer to."
