Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered geometry (area and perimeter of rectangles), fractions (multiplication), decimals, place value, percentages, and roman numerals. We also went over problems from the practice test. The student is getting better at determining how to approach the word problems."
"We started today with practicing how to plan out her writing for the writing prompt portion of the test. She created a web, and we talked about specifics of how to create good examples to support reasoning. Next, we moved on to practice with sentence completion and synonyms. She is very comfortable with this. Next, we focused mostly on the parts of speech the vocabulary comes from. Finally, we moved into math word problems and algebraic equations. She was thrilled when she solved her first algebraic equation on her own! Finally, we ended with a literary passage and a poem which she read and answered comprehension questions about. Next time, our last session before the test, we will focus on specific strategies for preparing mentally for the exam and what she can do on Friday and Saturday to get ready for the big day."
"We began today with reviewing the writing samples that the student wrote since our last tutoring session. All together, he wrote three essays in the past week, all of which were very well-written. Overall, his writing skills have improved greatly since we began our sessions together. After critiquing the writing samples, I reviewed verbal questions that he can expect to see on the ISEE and SSAT exams. He has an extraordinary knowledge of vocabulary for his age, so I always try to challenge him in this area. Additionally, we reviewed reading comprehension, which he had no difficulties with at all. I left him with additional writing practice to complete before our next session."
