Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I met with the student and we focused on his speed of mental operation via flash cards instead of more timed tests. He is able to almost automatically recall the answers for any number +1 We focused on increasing his speed of mental operation for these problems as well as the rest of the flash cards. He completed the first trial of flash cards for any number + 2 in two minutes. The next session will review all of his flash cards and will focus on increasing his speed for the flash cards of any number +2. Scheduled the next session for Tuesday 10/14."
"During our session, I challenged the student with a few new concepts to push him to the next level. First I made sure that he was understanding and excelling in his current studies. Then, I showed him a new concept of two-step equations with decimals and fractions solving for a single variable. He picked it up very quickly, so I challenged him even further. I showed him how to express an angle in radians. He had never seen this before, so it took him a little bit to pick it up. He definitely showed me that he can expand his knowledge and be successful in higher level coursework. In our next session, I will test his memory on the subjects that I covered in this session, and then move even further so that he continues to feel challenged. I am confident that he will be able to pick up anything that I throw his way."
"The student and I went over some test corrections from a test she took last week. She is improving greatly but she still has some troubles on estimating numbers on a number line. We did multiple practice problems and she was improving greatly by the end. We then worked on homework which was writing simple equations. She is improving every week and she is a great student to work with!"
"Today we finished up the second chapter in the student's textbook, which means we're all caught up with his class and that he's ready for his test this weekend. We began by reviewing formulas, which he is increasingly comfortable with, and then moved onto inequalities, translating word problems, and a chapter that incorporated some concepts from geometry, such as complementary and supplementary angles."
"We specifically covered work problems that involved addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We worked on strategies to decide which one of the math functions to use. I also learned that she has issues with multiplication by two numbers times two numbers as well as division. However, I am very proud of her because she continues to learn and I am working with her on memorizing multiplication and division concepts."
"The student is doing very well and has a good understanding of the concepts she is being introduced in class each week. Today we reviewed the worksheets that she did in class this past week and we worked together to complete any work that was not completed in class and/or that her teacher assigned as practice. Specifically, I reinforced with her the value of each decimal place in a number from the ones to the tens to the hundreds all the way up to the ten thousands. Then we worked on understanding the relationships between identical digits in different decimal places within the same number. She understands that each decimal place to the left is 10 times greater than the one to it's right. She needs to continue working on her multiplication tables."
"We went over the arithmetic essentials because the student did not have any homework. We made sure to cover all of the principles needed so that he can be in shape for the exams he has coming up."
"Today we went over the chain rule in section 3.6. She seemed to have no trouble with conceptual problems or computational problems. She's working very hard."
"The student and I discussed her overall concerns related to her MBA statistics course. We went over her homework and focused on the sections she had trouble with. Specifically, I explained what a Z score is and how they are used in calculating proportions of samples at or below a specific raw score in different distributions. Together, we did the related problems from her past homework. At the end of the session we talked about what topics to cover at our next meeting, which we scheduled for tomorrow."
"We went over vector arithmetic and applications: lines, planes, parametric equations, dot products, cross products, triple products, scalar products, parallelepipeds."
"The student spent the session working on his homework. He is doing well at working the problems by himself."
"The student and I prepared for her test. She understood the concepts very well. We worked on review of things like factoring out equations that were all the way to the 6th or 7th power. I felt like she was definitely ready for her test."
