Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was my first session with the student. We worked on ACT Science and Reading since they were his lowest scores. I found that for both sections, time was not a problem. Instead, we focused on learning how to effectively interpret the figures/graphs in the science section. I had him write down the main idea of each passage he read and an interpretation of what each table/graph was telling him before tackling the questions. By the end of the session he seemed more comfortable with data analysis. English went well. He missed few questions and those that he did miss were often minor mistakes because he missed key words in the question stem such as "EXCEPT, or NOT". I had him start "marking up" his passage and the question stems to make sure he knew exactly what the questions was asking him when he went back to the passage to verify his answers. We also tried predicting the answer to the question and then matching the prediction to the answer choices given and this gained him a few points. Next session we will work on English and Math."
"The student worked through some of the math of the ACT while I noted where she was having trouble, so that we can focus more on these issues the next time."
"Since the student's exam is in 2 weeks, we have been focusing mostly on specific problem areas, such as the Conflictual Viewpoints passage in the Science section."
